Jersey, Guernsey or Isle Isle Man

Was due to take DS (2) to Lanzarote early May but I’ve been poorly in hospital and they’ve advised I don’t go that far, I’m 6 months pregnant.

DS is desperate to go on a plane so I’d love to take him somewhere still. I’m looking at Hersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man. Any recommendations for or against? The trains on the IOM would keep him very happy but the weather looks more likely to be rubbish?

Anywhere else a very short flight away?

Thanks Grin

Sark!

Fly to Guernsey, short ferry ride to Sark. No cars, no pollution, a few tractors, bikes for hire (how old is DS?) or horse and carriage or tractor pulled carriage to get around.

Doctors but no hospital though, nearest would be a boat ride to Guernsey (also nice but the big metropolis compared to sleep Sark).

Oh, just saw DS is 2. We took our son at that age and he loved it because he scooted everywhere - no cars! You can hire scooters but we tools ours with him.

If the weather is good one of the hotels has a pool with a slide (have to stay there or have s meal there to use it), beach was deserted and we went in August(!) but I’d check accessibility, there are several, because the one we went to was a steep cliff walk.

Chocolate factory, strawberries and cream ( if they’re ready in May) and did I say, no cars!

Thank you. I’ll have a look! Not sure DP will go with no hospital though. Can you do day trips to Sark from one of the other islands?

Is a plane ride definitely ok when you're unwell? Because if your son is just two then he might enjoy a train ride or ferry just as much? (but you know your son and your medical needs).

There are lots of lovely places to visit that don't involve a flight like Cornwall and the Isle of Wight.

I have heard that Jersey is beautiful though and they do get good weather.

Aylarose · 19/04/2018 00:11

** by plane ride I meant 'flight'- sleep deprived!

redastherose · 19/04/2018 00:17

If he likes trains then definitely Isle of Man. Victorian rail network with proper Steam Railway and also an Electric Railway. Short flight too.

frasier · 19/04/2018 00:17

Yes, day trips to Sark from Guernsey

Icklepickle101 · 19/04/2018 06:09

Yes, consultant has said he is happy for me to travel by whatever means I wish but no more than 2 hours from the UK. DS is fascinated by planes so had got veryexcoted about Lanzarote and I’m hoping if we still fly somewhere he won’t know it wasn’t the intended travel plans Grin

Guernsey is good for a 2 year old- beaches, some lovely parks and it's very safe and child friendly.
I'd stay in Guernsey and do day trips to Herm and Sark, and you could also go to Jersey. All the beaches in Sark are accessed from the cliffs, so not easy to walk at six months pregnant. I went recently and commented to DH there's no way I'd be able to do it when pregnant!

You'll need travel insurance for any of the CI or IOM, no NHS here.

DuchyDuke · 19/04/2018 06:32

Isle of Wight is probably better with a kid.

crayoladreamz · 19/04/2018 06:36

Make sure you get insurance as obviously guernsey and jersey aren’t in the Uk (surprising how many people don’t realise that!!) so no NHS and you’d get a whooping medical bill if you need the hospital.

The EHIC card isn’t relevant either as they’re not in the eu

redastherose · 20/04/2018 00:01

The iom does have a nhs, reciprocal arrangements with uk, can easily access medical care if necessary.

Papergirl1968 · 20/04/2018 23:18

I love the IoM.
Alternatively you could consider somewhere like Inverness - cheap flights with Flybe and EasyJet etc, or Dublin.

DreamingofSunshine · 21/04/2018 05:51

Sorry rose I didn't know that. I hear of too many people come to the Channel Islands and get landed with a hefty medical bill.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 21/04/2018 12:50

IoM.

Tinlegs · 21/04/2018 12:52

Barra. He can land on the beach on a plane.

BlueChampagne · 24/04/2018 13:59

Isles of Scilly?

LoniceraJaponica · 28/04/2018 21:47

I adore Sark and have been 3 times, but wouldn't risk it if there was a chance of a medical emergency. No cars on the island, no flights to and from the island and a 45 minute ferry ride.

Depending on where the OP lives maybe a flight to Cornwall or Scotland might do instead - somewhere with easy access to a hospital.

somewhereovertherain · 06/05/2018 12:49

all three are great but for me it’ll be the Isle of Man. Lovely walks, trains, trams and horse trams, fantastic ice cream. Much less busy that jersey or Guernsey.

For all 3 make sure you take out travel insurance as the previous recripical deal with the UK no longer exists
