Lake Windermere

I would really like to go to lake Windermere for few days for bank holiday but prices for me, partner and 2 children are coming up at £1500+ for 2 nights May bank hol weekend.
Is there any places that are cheap around that area? We don’t mind having to drive to lake Windermere as long as there is something local to where we would be staying.
Thanks

There are loads of cheeper (and better) places to stay! Especially if you are driving. I would definitely look outside of Windermere - the Lake District is relatively small and you can access the town of Windermere easily from many places - plus the lake is long and you can enjoy it at many different points. Surrounding towns are Kendal and Ulverston - with lots to enjoy and easy to get into the lakes. I can recommend the Stone Cross Manor or Castle Green (both in Kendal) for 2 nights - they have pools! Plus you are then about 8 miles to Windermere - and it's only a bit further to all the other lovely places to explore...

Yes and the drive from Kendal to Windermere is beautiful! Can I suggest a trip to Buttermere lake, we had an amazimg time here.

Tbh because you are planning a break over a bank holiday, all hotels and b & b realise they will soon be getting booked up so their will not be many bargain prices to be had. I live in Cumbria and as posters have said you have picked the honeypot for tourists ( Windermere will be heaving and all honesty not the best of places to be ). Try looking on a map and booking somewhere just outside the national park and drive to your destinations.

The youth hostel in Ambleside is right on the Windermere lakeside, we had a fab time staying there. Yes the accommodation is basic (and getting a bit tired though they might have refurbished since we were there) but we were fine with that.

There's also the wooden pods at the National Trust Low Wray campsite or a tent of course (I don't camp too early or late in the year myself but lots are less wussy than me).

Disclaimer - I haven't checked availability and it will be getting tight.

Grange-over-Sands is reasonably close and beautiful in its own right.
