Favourite places in England

Now that the kids are a bit bigger and enjoy camping i want to start travelling round the countryside a bit more. What I want is a wish list of wonderful places to work our way through.

I feel pretty well travelled outside the UK, and have also hiked a lot in both Wales and Scotland. But even though I've lived in England for over 20 years I feel pretty ignorant when it comes to England.

So where is your absolute favourite place in England?
Am especially interested in spectacular cycle routes

Watching with interest. Places I love are West Cornwall, Lyme Regis, Peak District, York (want to explore Yorkshire more soon though).

New Forest. Brockenhurst area is excellent for camping and cycling. I love anywhere on the Hampshire/Dorset border and also look at the South Hams area of Devon. Every town and village has a different character there. I love Totnes in particular.

I have never been to the Lake District and that's an area I have always wanted to explore too.

Love Devon & Cornwall and have been many times, Dartmoor is particularly beautiful. However, we recently went to Northumberland which was truly stunning - Holy Island, Farne Islands, loads of beautiful beaches, castles, I could go on. Relatively uncrowded too, even in school holidays.

Great Langdale in the Lake District.

I have never really been down south so can't speak for there but go to the Lake District most weekends as it's my all time favourite place.

Also really like the North York Moors (but only in good weather, it can be quite bleak otherwise).

Can you give me specific places in the lakes/moors. Don't know we're to start!

It's not spectacular but I have a very soft spot for the cotswolds - train to somewhere like Moreton in Marsh and cycle back on the sustrans paths is great.

The North East Coast is one of my favourite parts of the UK - both Northumbria (Craster and Low Newton) and North Yorkshire (Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay) are well worth investigating.

We spend a lot of time out in the Peak District too - for bike routes in this area try the route from ther Derwent Dam at Fairholmes up to Slipery Stones and back (just of the Snake Pass a few miles west of Sheffield), the Monsal Trail from Miller’s Dale to Buxton, or the Manifold Way, which starts just by a lovely little campsite at Hulme End.

The Isle of Wight....the east side - Bembridge, Seaview and St Helens are gorgeous. The Island has more than enough for a family in one week...in fact a weeks never enough which is why we keep going back!

Suffolk is wonderful for cycling.

My favourite place is the lake district.

I had a thing about exploring the UK well before going abroad for holidays. Some of my favourite places are
Isle of Wight (obv)
Lizard Peninsula
Gower peninsula
South Downs
Vale of the White horse
North Norfolk
Lake District

Castleton in the Peak District would be a gorgeous base. Or Hathersage. The Monsal trail mentioned above is lovely and the tissington trail pretty steady.

Whitby -Yorkshire
Corner/Sheringham - Norfolk
Hadrains Wall - Northhumberland (especially good if they like History)

My two favourite places that I’ve been (not from the UK) are York and the Lake District, particularly around Windermere.

Peak dIstrict; Castleton, Hope, Edale area. Absolutely incredible and fairly accessible for walking.

Northern Lake District; Threlkeld is a great base and much quieter that further south in the Lakes. The peaks are high and challenging but really the Lake District is one of the most amazing places ever.

Yorkshire Dales; anywhere really. Malham cove is a must see walk. So much to see in a small area, it's breathtakingly beautiful.

South Downs; I live here and it's lovely. At a push I'd recommend the Beachy Head, Cuckmere Haven stretch but it's all lovely and amazing for off road cycling.

North Wales / Snowdonia has some truly outstanding scenery. Lots of places to camp

Keswick in the Lake District is lovely 😁

Rutland! And if you like cycling there are some amazing routes around the reservoir. It is the most beautiful place in England!

The Lake District. My perfect spot is the Lakeside Hotel in Lake Windermere looking over the Lake in Spring knowing that there is so much beauty all around you.

At completely the other end of the scale, I really like Brighton for the hustle and bustle and the Lanes and the sea.

North wilts. Cycle the ridgeway. Rolling downs, ancient stuff all over.

Herefordshire is nice too

And as something of a lightweight cyclist I think a canal towpath is good for an adventure what with being flat and all.
