We have three day in York at the end of this week, Sat/Sun and Monday. 2x DSes ages 11 and 13. So far on my list are York Minster for the Sunday service, Jorvik Viking Centre, a walk in the city walls, possibly the 2 NT places in th city as we have NT membership. What else should we do?

Anywhere especially good to eat? We are staying in an Air bnb so will be mostly self catering.

What about the York pass? It seems quite expensive...

Other suggestions welcome that may be of interest to us! Thank you!

York Dungeon - A 75-minute immersive experience made up of several mini shows with live actors and special effects. It can be a little scary and it's quite gruesome!

York Chocolate Experience - interactively tells the story of York's Chocolate and sweet making history. You can watch chocolate making demonstrations, have a go yourself and try lots of samples!

National Railway Museum - such an interesting museum regardless of whether you like trains or not. Lots to do. Daily demonstrations include the locomotive turntable and the winding engines. There are also rides behind some of the big engines and there's a ride-on miniature railway. In the workshop, you can see the traditional skills of the engineers and craftsmen or have fun building your own models using amazing interactive displays. Free admission.

I'm also going this weekend with 16yo dd. So far on our itinerary we have Primark, schuh, the apple store, a bubble tea shop and McDonald's Grin

I think I'd better watch this thread and start adding some ideas of my own!

Betty's tearoom!

Maybe a ghost walk one evening or hire one of the small self drive boats on the Ouse?

The Harry Potter shops in the Shambles

Definitely York Museums. Free for under 17s, £22 from memory for an adult, lasts a year.

The Castle Museum is well worth visiting.

OutsideContextProblem · 31/03/2018 09:09

My early teens loved the ghost walk we did, and the Railway Museum.

OutsideContextProblem · 31/03/2018 09:10

(And teen DD loved the charity shops)

David Attenborough opened the new Jurassic World exhibition last week, I haven’t been yet but I bet it is fab.

Second the chocolate experience - interesting and with lots of samples to try!

Castle museum is amazing too - very interactive and done really well. We especially liked the ww2 section where you can learn to tie bandages etc.

If you have a car flamingo land isn't far away if your kids are into rides etc.

Have fun; York is brilliant!

Echo the railway museum suggestion. We went last weekend and had a good time. Free admission too (suggested donation of course) but the flip side of that “no upfront charge” is that eating is rather expensive.

We also went in here to eat just a coffee and cake kinda thing but it was very nice and welcoming www.bar-convent.org.uk

Perhaps not the right spot for teenagers? Depends on your DSs I guess, but an interesting place as an alternative to a high street cafe.

Checkedwoolblanket · 31/03/2018 09:19

The bar convent museum is really well done. Better place to eat just over the road Caffe La Tazzina. Best coffee in York imo! Tiny but you can phone ahead and book, even for breakfast.

GnotherGnu · 31/03/2018 14:55

If the weather's OK, have a walk round the walls.

GnotherGnu · 31/03/2018 14:55

Agh, just noticed that was on your list already! Ignore me...

Ninabellina · 02/04/2018 21:51

Your thread has inspired us to do an overnight tip to York!
Can anyone recommend any accommodation please?

HairyMaclary · 07/04/2018 20:14

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your suggestions. We are having a wonderful time! Chocolate experience, JORVIK and railway museum today. Minster, museums and ghost walk tomorrow. We’ll be shattered, (and poorer!) by Monday.
