Travel to Isle of Wight

We are travelling from London to the Isle of Wight for a bank holiday weekend in May and have the choice of crossing Lynmouth to Yarmouth or Portsmouth to Fishbourne. As we are intending to stay near Yarmouth, we think the Lynmouth to Yarmouth ferry sounds better even if it takes an extra half an hour to get to Lynmouth than Portsmouth. Does anyone have any advice on which crossing would be best? What is the traffic likely to be like around Southampton at 5pm on a bank holiday Friday? On the other hand would the traffic in Portsmouth be worse? Any advice or experiences would be welcome.

Sorry that should say Lymington not Lynmouth!

Take out a mortgage for the fare 😂

Cheapest (but longest crossing) is Red Funnel - Southampton to Cowes.
I generally use Wightlink Portsmouth- Fishbourne but it's expensive.

All routes will be busy for Easter, unfortunately.

Lymington is my favourite crossing!

Would definitely choose portsmouth At a bank holiday weekend the New Forest is very congested getting through Lyndhurst can be a nightmare
Much easier to travel Fishbourne to Yarmouth once on the island

I would say it'll be pretty busy getting to Lymington on a bank hol Friday, Portsmouth is much easier (or Southampton). We always use Portsmouth, but then again we have never stayed in Yarmouth.

The island really isn’t that big, so tbh it’s probably easier to get the ferry with the shorter distance to the island, and then drive across to where you are staying.

Ouch, Yes it is very expensive at £180! Have enough Tesco vouchers for one way.

Hotels, cottage owners etc on the island can book ferries cheaper than we can from the mainland, worth checking with your hosts. I just saved £40 that way.

Yep I've paid 35 return through holiday company!

If anyone is traveling to iow before 24th may I have red funnel voucher codes I won't be using (island resident)
Midweek day return 33.50 iv got 3
20% off stays of 1 night or more iv got 10
Pm me if you'd like one
As residents we often get codes through but I don't travel this time of year
