Aviemore skiing - best time to go

Obviously winter is the answer! We are thinking of going to Aviemore for the first time in January/February next year. Never been skiing before and so am looking for recommendations for beginner skiing. Best campsites and ski schools nearby.

Thanks for any help :)

Bagaduish chalets are near the ski, slopes, I wouldn't go camping, it's freezing in Jan and Feb. There is a very good welcome to aviemore site, there are loads of ski schools all cater for beginners.

retirednow - we have a caravan with central heating and onboard bathroom facilities. We're certainly not mad enough to go in a tent! There are caravan sites open year round up there. Was just wondering which one would be nearest the slope. :)

I wouldn’t book a ski trip in Scotland unless you won’t be fussed if you don’t get skiing at all.
We’re going this weekend with a fully flexible hotel room we can cancel if it’s too rainy/ windy/ or simply no snow.
Sorry if this sounds negative, I love skiing in Scotland and do so regularly but I wouldn’t plan a ski holiday here. You could get lucky, or you could be disappointed. This year has been exceptional, however last year there were few skiing days.
Think the campsite at loch morlich is open all year, it’s on the access road to the slopes.

Closest campsite would be Glenmore which is just a few miles from Cairngorm ski centre. In terms of timing, the Scottish season tends to be a wee bit later than the continent, so generally more reliable in March than January. You can never guarantee the snow, but lots of other things to do locally and it's a beautiful area just to potter round, esp in early Springtime.

You can't plan skiing in Scotland.

If you're dead set on skiing then go abroad. Otherwise plan to go to Scotland mainly to do other things and ski if the weather conditions are good enough. Most often than not the weather conditions are not. It's very common for the ski areas to be shut because of high winds, snow conditions are very variable and it frequently rains.

We live in Scotland and wait until the Friday night before deciding whether to go or not.
