Northumberland where to visit! Seahouses etc.

We're off to Seahouses for a week this coming Friday. It's going to be chilly but I'm so looking forward to it as I've never been to that part of the UK before, only Edinburgh and Durham but no where in between.

Is there any places really worth a visit while we're there? Alnwick castle is closed sadly, we're visiting the Kielder forest park to do a stargazing experience, and we've planned a day and stop over in Newcastle on the way home (near Manchester) as DP loves it there and I've never been.

I'm into quirky shops, love little villages, tea rooms and nice cafes, places with a view and architecture and things to take photos of. DP likes anywhere with cool history, interesting transport and views.

Northumberland is beautiful but it’s likely to be cold ld and wet.
The pizzeria in Seahouses is gorgeous.
My favourite place is lower Newton (the food at the Ship in is fab if your a foodie) and Dunstanborough castle is lovely.
Loads of fab beaches.
Wrap up for the weather and enjoy.

@Brighteyes27 what is the name of the pizzeria in Seahouses? Élan Pizzeria?
DH and I are in Northumberland next week and looking for recommendations too.
We're planning fish and chips on the quay in Amble followed by icecream at Spurelli's.
Bamburgh beach is a must for us too.

Go to Corbridge - it's a bit further south. The quirkiest shop you will ever find - called RE, cute village with cute cafes. We go on the way back from Northumberland to London.

Thefillijonk - Yes I think it was Elan pizzeria. I didn’t go in I sent DH as it was torrential rain but it was lovely and a nice change from fish and chips (as we were there for a week). The coffee and ice-cream in Spurrelli’s is a must (lots of unusual flavours but just delicious... I am so envious). If you make it to Lower Newton I would definitely recommend the Ship Inn if your anywhere nearby. it is a proper pub, small inside (but in warmer weather you can sit outside), the menu was small but the food was absolutely delicious (slow food at its finest gorgeous homemade cheeses and chutney and a micro brewery so lots of real ales). Double yum yum.

Here is a picture of Lower Newton with Dunstanburgh Castle in the background. It’s a lovely place that gives me a nice warm feeling. Just a tiny car park at the top. The kids loved a trip to Lindusfarne as well (waiting for the tide to go out).

joining in but late to the party but yes to Lower Newton and the Ship Inn and yes to Corbridge - decent pub lunch at the Angel and RE (behind the petrol station next to the Angel) is a treasure trove

TheFillijonk · 31/01/2018 21:39

Oh! I love RE in Corbridge! I wonder if I can persuade DH to stop off on the way up.

Barter Books is the other must visit for us. I'm rather partial to their mushrooms on toast!

Bit late as seems you've already been but thought I'd add for those browsing!

Went for a week last summer. Travelled from London so broke the journey with an afternoon/night in York (Premier Inn). Carried on next day with photo stop at Angel of the North. While in Northumberland we:

Walked from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle (highly recommended - beautiful)
Low Newton beach
Walk along Bamburgh beach with castle in background - stunning
Walk to Holy Island (a must but watch the tides!)
Farne Islands boat trip from Seahouses followed by fish n chips on Seahouses beach (fab rockpools!)
Alnmouth- lovely beach & village
Hadriens Wall & Housesteads Fort
Beadnell Beach - lovely
Grace Darling Museum Bamburgh - free & interesting
Cragside

Enjoyed them all!

Stayed in cottage in little village called Ellingham near Alnwick which has a fab child friendly pub with lovely food - Pack Horse Inn.

Would add that the area was relatively uncrowded even in August, unlike Devon/Cornwall I'd imagine, and at least as gorgeous. A much unspoilt and undervisited part of the UK! Would love to go back Smile

Nice cafe on coast at Beal overlooking lindisfarne
Had two three night breaks in June last two years but maybe no doing it this year.
Lindisfarne is lovely. Be sure to go to the little harbour and the upturned boat sheds.
