I can highly recommend the Torridon in Achnasheen, absolutely fabulous luxury boutique hotel, gorgeous rooms and stunning scenery and amazing staff. Nice goodies at turndown, we got Temple Spa Sleep Cream and a banana scrub. It has a fantastic whisky bar. The Torridon Lodge is just next door and does great food. Not far from the Bealach na Ba, thrilling drive on a single winding road through the mountains in the Applecross Peninsula. Lovely wee Inn at the end of it.

Kinlock Lodge on Skye, particularly if you like good food.

Ocies · 08/09/2017 19:03

Kinloch

I'll second Kinloch Lodge, it has a Michelin star.

Monachyle Mhor in Balquiddher. It is my absolute dream destination. Gorgeous food, fabulous scenery, not too stuffy.

chemenger · 08/09/2017 19:18

Kinloch lodge every time. Had a horrible time at Monachle Mohr.

dementedma · 08/09/2017 19:24

oooh, I know the man who owns Monachyle Mhor. He is amazing and dynamic and just fabulous. A wonderful hotel led by a genuinely warm and friendly guy.

chemenger.. really? I am interested to know why. I haven't stayed there, but have visited a lot for drinks/coffee etc and I know the food is amazing. I love the ambiance and the scenery. It's top of my list of wish locations to go for a few nights. If you had a bad time i am curious as to why?

We were in one of the rooms that are separate from the main building. It was winter, snow on the ground, when we arrived the heating wasn't working. Eventually they got it on, then it was like an oven with no control over temperature in the room, so hot we couldn't sleep. The hot water went off while DH was in the shower, he had to rinse shampoo off with stone cold water. The response from the staff was to laugh at him when we complained. At all times the staff were completely offhand. There seemed to be only about 4 seats in the bar, yet they were still able to ignore us. Food was fine but excruciating slow service. No lounge or anywhere to sit after dinner. Just mediocre at every turn while charging a lot. To be fair this, was a long time ago and I think the woman who was running it then has passed it over to her son, who was the chef when we were there and he was very pleasant and friendly when he came into the restaurant to chat.
I've been to Kinloch Lodge twice and both times it was great, a proper country lodge experience with log fires, squashy sofas and good food and service.

Oh my goodness, how awful. They should have refunded your money! It is a bit off the wall, but thats how I like it. The staff also vary greatly, and I don't get the impression their staff training is up to much. The scones and coffee are to die for and I love the setting. Must look at Kinloch Lodge as an alternative.

Can't recommend a hotel as although we have visited the Highlands several times,we have stayed in a cottage self catering.
It's a beautiful area and easily the best place ive visited in the UK.the scenery is stunning.
Of course you must see Loch Ness, it's mesmerising.

laurielee23 · 08/09/2017 21:35

Actually I have been to Kinloch Lodge for tea. I found it a bit scary somehow. Tea was lovely but I didn't feel at ease. It is in a spectacular setting though.
