Somewhere lovely for 10 year anniversary

We'd like to do something special for our anniversary next year, we got married at xmas but will probably go away at Feb half term.

We'd like somewhere for 2 nights, a hotel, within 3 hours of Newcastle, either urban or rural we can't decide, but somewhere we can relax and have a grown up time- (once we went to Greenwich and felt terrible guilt that we hand them brought our sons as they'd have loved the maritime museum etc)

We have done Edinburgh to death so maybe not there.

Budget approx £600.

Seaham Hall

Hmmmm that wouldn't really feel 'away' enough for us.....I grew up v close to there. I know it's lovely though.

Am assuming you know the north east coast well? What about going to the other side? You could be in the Lake District in two hours.. somewhere like Cartmel perhaps? A couple of very nice and posh restaurants (l'enclume), fancy b&bs and the scenery and coast (can go up to morecambe bay) is such a different feel. 3 hours gives you loads of options!

susannahmoodie · 04/08/2017 20:28

Is that is a good idea. What kind of posh B&bs? Could you suggest any. I have fancied l'enclume in the part but bought it was ££££

Glasgow?
Plenty to do there.
Will you be driving or train?
Or Dublin or Belfast by air, presuming you live near Newcastle
I presume you're not taking the kids
I have a February birthday. I hate it. Horrible time of year. I didn't even celebrate my 65th as weather is usually rotten and we were already booked for Tenerife on march 1 st , a much more sensible option.
I think I'd go to Alicante in Feb. You can pick up some good bargains in winter time
Ryan air flights are dead cheap from Newcastle. My friend loves Benidorm. We went mid January last year. It was about 16-18 degrees for a few hours in the day but cooled quickly. I'm not a lover of Benidorm but we got a 4 star hotel for £40 a night with an amazing breakfast thrown in. That was £100 in summer
Although it was on a bus route, it was small and quiet. I just hate how you are surrounded by all the high rises there.
If we did it again, I'd go to Alicante instead.

If it has to be in the uk, at that time of year I'd probably go to york. We go nearly every week and love it or you could rent a cottage near thirsk and then you have ripon, Harrogate, knaresbrough, Scarborough on your doorstep and scenery is stunning.
Three hours on a train gets you to London :-)

Seaham hall wouldn't float my boat at all.
I'm not a spa person.

Hambledon Hall in Rutland is just over your three hour limit - the food is the best I've ever had, anywhere.

I entered and won a competition for my daughter to have a night at seaham hall. Her and her husband had the full day in the spa, with meals and and an overnight stay.
They loved it.
I got to mind my baby grandson which to me was a much better option

A day in the spa and a wander round York?

annandale · 06/08/2017 08:58

I know it's 5 hours on the train, but Oxford? Malmaison do a £240 dinner/room/champagne deal for one night, see what you can negotiate for the extra night. I haven't stayed there myself but friends have said it was nice. Old Parsonage and Old Bank unfortunately don't seem to be available in Feb. A lot of fun Oxford things are very grown up (covered market, Holywell music room, touring a college). Can be very atmospheric in February.

Just to throw in a curveball, Gothenberg? It's only a 90 min flight from Birmingham ( not sure from Newcastle) and it's beautiful.

I second the Lake District. Lots of lovely lakeside hotels, lovely food and nice walks

tigerdriverII · 06/08/2017 09:13

Peak District? We stayed at East Lodge in Rowsley recently: it was fab, great food. Near Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Buxton, Bakewell

Headlam Hall near Darlington is beautiful has a pool and small spa if that's your thing. You can hire a classic car and picnic if your feeling minted. Food was great and it's close to High Force and the Tees Valley if you want to get out and about. We had a child free night in May HT is was gorgeous
