Cornwall (Marazion) with a teenager in an arm cast!

We are heading down to Marazion (near Penzance, opposite St. Michael's Mount) in a couple of weeks for a fortnight's family holiday. Unfortunately my eldest son (17 yrs) has broken his wrist and will be in cast for the entire time. He understandably is very p'd off and says he doesn't want to come with us and his younger siblings as he can't do all of the excitingly things-surfing, coasteering, kayaking etc etc. Does anyone have any suggestions what there is to do that might keep him vaguely entertained while we are down there? Staying home isn't an option as we live very rural and he wouldn't be able to get around, do shopping etc and tbf all he'll do at home is sit on his phone! Thanks!

will he really be in a cast still? or would a wrist support be ok by then?maybe worth asking the consultant.

Still cast. It's the annoying scaphoid in his wrist and when switching from back slab to cast on Thurs they found the fracture had displaced slightly, so back again this Friday for reassessment but without doubt will be cast the whole time.

Ouch, tough location for that age - I grew up in Penzance and my DP is from Marazion, and there's not a lot for teenagers to do down there (we spent our teenage years stoned or working.....).

Were you planning a very active trip? Is he an active lad normally?

Abloodybigholeintheground · 25/06/2017 21:45

Yes, normally very active. Sad We have got cast covers but I'm not sure a waterproof cast is an option at our hospital-but will ask at the end of the week.

It seems they do exist for that fracture. It must be a common request, especially at this time of year - I'd think they'd be reasonably geared up for it. Is it the fracture clinic he's seeing? Could you call tomorrow and ask the question so it's something they are prepared to for?

Otherwise, as per the other thread, maybe he'd like to be home for the two weeks?

If not, there's plenty of walking and hiking routes you could all do. Take a trip to the Minack Theatre.

The Jubilee Pool has reopened, and would be brilliant if he can swim with a waterproof cast, but if not he can sunbathe and get into the shallows and keep his arm out the water - maybe a waterproof cover for that?

You can get watertight covers for wrist breaks. We used one the other year for DD when she broke her wrist at the start of the summer. She was able to go swimming with it on and it was easier in the bath than having to keep the cast out of the water. Felt relatively expensive at the time (about £20 from memory) but was worth every penny.
