Skye- where on the island to stay

I am trying to book a week self catering in Skye in July for me, DH, and DS 14. Usually we go to Mull and have stayed in Tobermory but fancied a change.I thought Portree doesn't look as nice ? OTOH don't want to be having to drive long distances to see everything( or have no WIFI for DSHmm) . As we are booking so late I know availibility is limited. Idealy we fancy some walking, eating out occasionaly , generally chilling.
Opinions on which part is best welcome .Also are most of the roads single track ? Google maps does not seem to be taking that into account when I looked at how long it woould take to drive across from Portree to Uig.
Thanks

If you're booking for July, it'll most likely be a case of taking what you can get rather then being choosy - Skye's busy this time of year! Portree would be your best place as it's the most central town on the island.

There's main roads and single track, but at this time of year a ten minute drive could take twice that because of the tourists. Don't worry about getting anywhere on time, just enjoy the drive Grin

And there's nothing wrong with Portree, especially if you want to eat out and whatnot without having to drive every night.

Thanks SantanicoPandemonium ,Yes choice is limited. I've seen a few places in Uig and wanted to compare with Portee . Good to know about the roads as well.

I'm from Skye, and we used to end up with people camping in our front garden because there was just not a single bed left on the island sometimes Grin

Uig's nice enough, but if you can find somewhere in Portree that would be my first choice. Also, if you're not used to the roads they can be pretty daunting at nights when it's dark.

Maybe look at broadford too - it's smaller then Portree, but there's a couple of nice restaurants (creelers do amazing food) and the road from Portree to broadford is a proper road with no single track.

There's good walking wherever you stay, and I can't imagine that anywhere wouldn't have wifi these days. Might only be 1meg though.....

Take a map book!

Oh I see SantanicoPandemonium ,I really need to get this booked Grin!
Thanks for the reccommendation for Creelers . Its not a holiday without good food that I haven't had to cook.

We stayed at Armadale which is south just off the ferry. We loved it but it was quieter so driving up to fairy pools/ Portree etc was fine.

I felt it was most beautiful part of island and the views were amazing.

We're staying in Skye again for a week at the end of August. Same house we booked last year, right on the waterfront, in Kyleakin. It's right on the other side of the bridge, and we thought it was a great base to go off and do lots of things. :)

We usually stay around Broadford. It's a small enough island so that nothing's that far away in any case. Last time we went we only had to refuel the car a couple of times and we went all over the place.

Thanks for your replies ,will look at it again and book soon
