Flying with Ryanair

Just wondering what are peoples experiences with bringing on cabin luggage with Ryanair. I know previously they were very strict but in the last 2-3 years I have never had anyone weigh my bag or check the measurements. This was my experience in a few airports. However, I'm traveling for the first time in Stansted and going to Rome this month. My bag is a bit bigger than the requirements so just wondering what are other peoples experiences and if it is worth the risk (I don't want a hefty charge for having my bag 1cm over!)

Thank you!!

dont risk it.
or take spare £60 or more to pay...

TheEmmaDilemma · 10/05/2017 18:02

Don't bother trying would be my take (I've flown UK/EU with them). You might make it, or you might not. And it will cost if you don't.

What route are you flying?

LapdanceShoeshine · 10/05/2017 18:03

You know you can take 2 bags now? & the second one can be bigger than you'd think, hang on...

TheFlis12345 · 10/05/2017 18:04

Last year they were not only measuring bags but they made me squeeze my travel wallet and book I was carrying in my hand into the bag (even though I had taken them out as I wanted them on the plane) and wouldn't let me past the ticket check until I had! Angry

LapdanceShoeshine · 10/05/2017 18:05

There are bags out there made for both specific sizes so if you can squeeze what you've got into the 2 bags you're ok

If not, probably cheaper to take a hold bag

Be careful about the second bag thing... yes it's better, but even if they decide to let the +1cm go, you'll be first to get your bag put in the hold. And again, that's if they don't charge you.

They really, honestly can very strict. And considering the prices and that it's very openly laid out, that's fair enough.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful replies! Don't know if it is worth risking it....might just need to buy a bag within their limits!

Thank you for the reply Smile

I'm traveling from Stansted to Rome Ciampino.

Wow!! That is fairly excessive!

I would say get a bag the correct size then buy what you need out 'there' rather than trying to cram stuff in. Probably cheaper than the excess baggage (size/weight) cost. Ditch stuff to come back.

susanboozan · 10/05/2017 18:55

Stick to the rules, it is not worth the worry.

Oh and bring half of what you think you need aswell. Bitter experience here, and I have it down to a fine art now. If I need something really badly and don't have it with me, I'll buy it there.

Enjoy the trip!

TheEmmaDilemma · 10/05/2017 19:26

I would just get the right bag OP. Save the worry and hassle and sail through and enjoy your holiday.

It's worth one less pair of shoes. :)

You need a Cabin Max bag, exactly the right size. You can also get a max-sized 'handbag' as well if you really need to take loads, but the cabin max bag is 44litres, which is plenty.

naturalbaby · 09/06/2017 21:14

I've travelled a few times recently with them carrying a cabin bag (within size limits), a smallish handbag and a large shopping bag (for food and drink, magazine etc).

I had to put the main bag in the hold once for no extra charge as we were near the back of the queue and there were too many bags for the cabin.
Generally they seem too busy/late to check sizes and just hand out luggage tags to the people at the back.

Madcats · 10/06/2017 20:22

Was just about to mention CabinMax. We've only ever flown Ryannair twice, but I was just about the only person that didn't have to shove my bag into the checker cage. TBF the flight was stuffed with blokes flying out for business with random-sized bags and the attendants made a lot of people pay.

5 years on my rucsac has been checked luggage 1/2 dozen times and has probably been thrown on a train/car 50+ times. It now has a small tear at a seam so will be carry-on from now on. DD has recently chosen one for a forthcoming school trip (4 times as checked luggage and counting). Only because I'm a recent convert, it might be worth getting some cheap packing cubes too.
