Lake District in Half Term - how bad will it be?

Going to the Lake District for this half term for a cottage big family holiday thingie...

I will be hiring a car and driving there - considering I don't have a car and haven't really driven in the UK (since a week in Cornwall ten years ago) how bad will it be?

I drive in the continent every holiday and am an ok driver, and have coped with Sicilian drivers and German ones and Portuguese ones...

DH says the roads will be horrible and steep and narrow and windy...

True? or overreacting?
I am shitting myself a bit to be honest...

There's a few windy roads - the A road from Ambleside to Coniston is definitely one you have to concentrate on, but it's just a country road nothing too horrific.

We live in the Lake District and the worst time is summer holidays. You should be ok. Enjoy it's not a bad forecast.

Roads aren't too bad. Comparable to Cornwall as in A roads don't guarantee dual carriageway or even single in places but as long as you check your route on a map you'll be fine.

Thanks again to all the locals!
I'm quite looking forward to it now...

And at least we are staying in a big house with wifi, so I can always escape away from the inlaws, toddler better cooperate with my excuse of 'she needs to nap' if i get away from them all!
