We're in North Yorkshire! Where shall we go?

Staying with DH and DDs 5 and 8 about 5 miles inland from Whitby.

Has anyone any recommendations for nice places we could visit?

We like quiet beaches but they need to have parking very close by as DH can't walk far.

Also I would love to know where the good farm shops and craft galleries are.

We went to Playdale farm park today and the girls loved it but it was a bit far to drive so looking for places nearer to our base.

Hope someone can come up with a few ideas for us Smile

Your kids would love Scarborough. There's a little train that runs along the sea front to the sea life centre. Otherwise Filey beach is v quiet and lovely.

gingerbreadmanm · 20/08/2016 21:50

if you have blue badges you should be able to park near-ish the beach in staithes i would think.

Glittermud · 20/08/2016 21:50

Flamborough head. You can search for fossils on the beach.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 21:50

Whitby station is just on the edge of the town centre and there is a massive car park just over the road.

RootBeer · 20/08/2016 21:50

Some other ideas...

Filey beach is fabulous and easily accessible. Hunmanby Gap and Cayton Bay are more secluded, but there are quite a few steps down to Cayton Bay.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 21:52

Nice RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs (v close to Flamborough) if you like sea birds. The cliff top path is well surfaced with lots of benches.

gingerbreadmanm · 20/08/2016 21:52

the north bay at scarborough is lovely lots to do for the kids and can park right next to peasholm park. catch the north bay railway to the sealife centre where there is also a fantastic crazy golf and another one alongside a beach side cafe a short walk away.

danby and castleton are also pretty. castleton has a nice park ideal for play and a picnic.

Glittermud · 20/08/2016 21:52

Inland there's the Balloon Tree which is a lovely pick your own fruit and veg place with a great farm shop and gorgeous cafe with a lovely pay area in a pretty garden where you can eat and watch the kids:

www.theballoontree.co.uk/ sorry not sure how to do links

He can walk, just not for a long time - he has psoriatic arthritis and his knees are quite bad just now. We don't have a blue badge.

All the suggestions are great though. Some of the smaller places especially appeal to me, I'm not one for lots of people.

Yes, the train station is right in Whitby, near the harbour.

We were there recently - loved Whitby itself. If you're on the train rather than driving, I highly recommend The Rusty Shears tearoom for home made cake and 100 types of gin in a pretty courtyard.

Robin Hoods Bay is a long steep walk from the car park, so won't work. There's a lift to the beach at Whitby from West Cliff car park, and as pp sad, parking at Sandsend so that might be better.

If you're not too far from Pickering, Castle Howard is really lovely - it's where they filmed Brideshead.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 21:53

I hated Forbidden Corner.

Bear in mind tha N Yorks is the largest county in England, so being in N Yorks doesn't necessarily mean somewhere is close.

Glittermud · 20/08/2016 21:54

Castle Howard is worth a drive too. It's Historic Houses if you have a card? Your DH wouldn't have to walk too much because a Kelly car which takes you from the entrance to an AMAZING play ground next to a lake what's you can have boat rides in the summer.

gingerbreadmanm · 20/08/2016 21:54

i think you would really enjoy staithes. if dh cant walk you could drop him and dc off down the hill then park at the top and walk down and join them?

QforCucumber · 20/08/2016 21:55

Stokesley is probably a bit too much of a drive - about 40 mins away (I'm from there yay)
Runswick bay.
The red lion pub on blakey Ridge
Whitby train station is a 2 min walk from the swing bridge if that helps.
Goathland
Grosmont
All surrounding villages, lovely tea rooms and fantastic views Smile

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 21:55

Dalby Forest?

Stick Man trail with lots of rests?
Lots of running around and playground stuff for the DDs.

RootBeer · 20/08/2016 21:56

Also - if you like a good farm shop try The Cedar Barn which has a new little train which is lots of fun. Also Bettons is supposed to be lovely and has some crafty things too. (I've never been though so can't comment!).

Biggest splash park in the universe or something opened in Scarborough earlier this "summer".

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 20/08/2016 21:59

We're staying in Glaisdale. Don't mind a bit of a drive but pref 45 mins max as it took us 10 hours to get here thanks to the shitty M1 and we were hoping for a bit of a rest!

OP - yes, Whitby station is right in town centre and next to loads of parking.

Whoami24601 · 20/08/2016 22:07

Someone else already mentioned it, but Falling Foss tea rooms are about 10 miles out from Whitby, and my absolute favourite to take the kids! There's an outdoor cafe sitting in a wooded valley, with a stream running round it for paddling. There's also a small play area. The cakes are delicious, and they do the best bacon sandwiches in the world!

Whoami24601 · 20/08/2016 22:09

Oh, and Betton Farm (known as the honey bee farm in my house!) is also worth a visit

gingerbreadmanm · 20/08/2016 22:11

beacon farm is definitely worth a visit. nice and quiet. barely any walking. ice cream and coffee shop with some free bits for the kids.

the sit in miniature railway in ruswarp is just around the corner as well as ruswarp boating lake and mini monsters soft play.

goathland is not far and is where heartbeat was filmed. fantastic steam train station there (think you can ride it) and can pop in the aidensfield arms. couple or souveneir shops and a nice play park.

RootBeer · 20/08/2016 22:11

Also - if you're in Glaisdale then there's no need to drive to Pickering or Whitby to get on the North York Moors Railway - you can get on at Grosmont or Goathlands which are both much closer.

Glittermud · 20/08/2016 22:41

Oh and Piglets! The kids will LOVE it. pigletsadventurefarm.com

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2016 11:46

DS (7) loves Piglets!
