Fishguard, Pembrokeshire - good for a holiday with 3yo and 7yo?

Due to various reasons I've not booked anywhere yet for our week's holiday 23-30 July but have found a lovely looking place in (Lower) Fishguard that I've provisionally booked.

I just wanted some MN advice please on the area! We've done Anglesey and Abersoch before but don't know Pemborkeshire. Because of tricky bedroom requirements I've looked in Devon, Dorset, Norfolk and haven't had any joy.
This one looks lovely but is way more than we wanted to spend so I want to double check with you lovely people before committing my hard earned cash!

Help!

We're going back to Pembrookshire for the umpteenth time this year - there is really, so much to do.

Folly Farm and The Dinosaur Park are great days out for kids and there was one we went to last year that I can't for the life of me remember the name of... something like ladybird or ladywell farm which was lovely (and less crowded than the other two). Also, if the weather's bad, check out Bluewater swimming pool, it gets busy and it's best to book in advance but mine have never failed to enjoy a trip there.

Thanks Just and Ben! Not long to go now... just need better weather! Grin

Be aware of travel times to things too. Fishguard to Haverfordwest or St David's is 30 minutes, so anything south of H'West is a full day out.
Try Manor Park instead of Folly Farm if you go south (both are zoos really, despite Folly Farm's name).
Dr Beynon's Bug Farm near St David's looks fun too.
Don't worry about the weather- it changes so quickly, you're bound to get a sunny patch most days.

Good advice Bony - noted.

Hi - can anyone tell me where the nearest big supermarket is please to Fishguard where we can shop for the week? I mean not a Spar-type place. Thanks!

Haverfordwest has a big Tesco. The Tesco Express in Goodwick has quite a lot of stuff. There's also an M&S foodhall in HW. But tesco deliver...

JustHappy3 · 18/07/2016 18:10

St David's has a spar type place but Fishguard is a bit cut off so Haverfordwest is the place to go. There's also a Morrison's in HW - easier to get to than the Tesco tbh.

DartmoorDoughnut · 18/07/2016 18:18

I thought Fishguard had a tesco? Only a small one but was ok last time I was there! Off to Newport Pembs soon, can't bloody wait

Folly Farm is fab for children so much to do - even on a wet day due to the huge jolly barn, indoor adventure play area, soft play and indoor vintage fairground - only 50p a rideSmile

For beaches Whitesands at St David's is amazing for bodyboarding and playing, Barafundle Bay is regularly voted Britain's best beach and is worth a visit.

Tenby and Saundersfoot are well worth a visit, Saundersfoot beach is one of the safest for children as you can co out for miles and still be up to your waist - no waves though.

Carew has the biggest car boot sale I've ever seen and is great for a browse on a Sunday morning if the weather isn't good enough for the beach.

Pembrokeshire is fab and is never as mad as Cornwall in the summer Smile

Really looking forward to it - and thanks for the tesco tip. I've never had a delivery from them so I might see if there are any money off vouchers!

Got back this afternoon from a lovely holiday, so thanks for all the tips!

Weather was a mixed bag but we got a lot done. Saturday we got fish & chips from Hooked - very good. Sunday was a lazy day, shopping in Haverfordwest, Sunday lunch then walking/playing in Lower Fishguard. Monday we went to St David's in the morning then the afternoon (hot and sunny!) on Whitesands beach which we loved. Tuesday was Castell Henllys - a BIG hit with all of us. DCs tried slingshots and making bread. So brilliant. Wednesday we spent around Fishguard - Ocean Lab in the morning (we loved it); then the tapestry and library in the afternoon plus a bit of time just chilling in the cottage. Thursday was Tenby where we went to the lifeboat station, had lunch and then went to South Beach. Weather much worse than forecast! Yesterday we spent the morning on Newport Sands including a bit of lovely rockpooling (DS swam in the sea - crazy boy), lunch in Newport then Pendre Ifan, the fort at Fishguard and back to the cottage for chinese takeaway and pack.

I was only disappointed in that we didn't spend more time on the beach at Lower Fishguard. We stayed in a cottage overlooking the harbour and most evenings it was either drizzly or we were all knackered and never really ventured out in the evenings. I wish we'd done that more and we didn't go crabbing either which I really wanted to do with the children. Still, all in all a great week and thanks again MNers for all your suggestions!

So glad you had a great time. Just spent the afternoon there crabbing! Really want to go to Castell Henllys - but i can never persuade the others. Which cottage were you in?
