Staying near Notting Hill next week for a long weekend but prepared to travel to interesting/quirky pubs.

Any suggestions?

UK may be a better option, yes.

Over to others to cast their vote Smile

This thread is making me teary. I miss London pubs and people. The ones mentioned in primerose hill and Hampstead are great. The river ones are amazing too.

Not riverside or pretty but if you are in the area try The Lamb Beer & Liquor in Holloway Road. It's a proper unmodernised victorian boozer but without the menace. They regularly have candlelit sing-songs round the piano, and the odd celeb drops in from time to time. I was recently singing Chas & Dave hits there with Ed Tudor Pole. They don't serve food but have an arrangement with a local posh pizza place who will deliver to your table.

If you are heading down to South east London, everyone goes to the Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich, but in my opinion, the Cutty Sark pub just a little further down has more atmosphere.

Hi all,

We'll be moving this over to our UK topic in a while. So many great places being flagged here, it would be a shame to lose the thread. Wine Smile

Another vote here for The Mayflower in Rotherhithe (my local). The Angel, just down the road from the Mayflower, and a short walk from Bermondsey Tube, is also a nice pub.

It has a nice outside area with a bronze statue of Alfred and Ada Salter and their daughter and cat. It's a quirky little piece of public art called "Alfred Salter's Daydream" (see pics). There's rather a sad story behind it (regarding the death of his wife and daughter). The Salters were medical practitioners and philanthropists who campaigned hard for better services and the alleviation of poverty in the then very run down areas of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Lots of places in the area are named after them. Alfred Salter was stolen a few years ago and there was a huge local campaign to have him replaced. They raised enough money for a statue of Ada to be put in situ as well, as previously it was just Alfred and their daughter and cat.

I also like the pubs on the other side of the river in Wapping already mentioned above.

In fact, I just like pubs on the river in London full stop Grin

Pubs visited so far:

Prospect of Whitby. Great pub, Fabulous setting on the Thames but mediocre food.

Sherlock Holmes - I really liked this. Pies were great. Lovely staff.

The French House, Soho - nice atmosphere. Small. No absinthe but did sell calvados. Good central location.
