National marine aquarium, smeatons tower (although my 4 year old was scared- but he's a bit like that). Lots on Dartmoor too.

Eden Project, it's only about an hour's drive away (bit less even). Buckland Abbey? (Bit over the head of a 4 year old perhaps though). BTW if it's not raining I found the Miniature Pony Centre on Dartmoor quite good, it's more than just feeding the ponies and you can stay the day there and take your own picnic if you want. I think it's about 6 pounds a person entrance though.
The aquarium is expensive but really good.
There's an ice rink in Plymouth too, I think it's at Plymouth Pavilions, it's quite good.

also there are various steam engine trains about, does he like Thomas the TE? I can't remember all of them, there's one from Dartmouth to er Paington I think. Tourist office could help, or google. Also you get to cross on the car ferry from Dartmouth to Kingsthingy on the opther side of the river Dart which he might quite like.
In Plymouth there's a foot passenger ferry from Devonport i think it is to Cremyll, on the Rame Peninsula, not a turisut thing but maybe fun. They do tourist trips by boat from Plymouth harbour (the Barbican near town cetnre, near the Mayflower Steps.
Oh and there's a newish thing near the steps called the Mayflower Experience which is indoors, no idea if it's suitable for a 4 year old cos I've never been in there. The BArbican area is v. toursity (is near the aquarium), they have a glassblowing place where you can watch them blowing glass, would occupy him for... about 2 minutes I should think

fridascruffs · 10/01/2007 12:07

oh yes, you could check what the Barbican's got on, they sometimes have children's shows i think.

barbican theatre I mean. And htere's a place on the barbican where you can paint your own pottery and htent hey fire it for you (or whatever you do to painted pottery).

I'd second the National Marine Aquarium. Not sure if you're Devon side or Cornwall side of Plymouth but Ben's Playworld at St Austell is good for wet days too.
