We are going to Dorset in the summer holidays for the first time with our 8 year old daughter. Can anyone suggest any must see places please?

All of the above and Kimmeridge Bay is great for fossil hunting also Bridport and Westbay. We often stay at Durdle Door Holiday Park which is lovely.

I think basing yourself in Bridport would probably suit for you Stuck.

Yes, Bridport would be a good option. It's got plenty in the way of grocery stores, restaurants and other shops, plus good access to all the places to visit both east and west of there. Despite the "port" in its name, Bridport itself is about a mile or so inland. You can walk/drive from there to West Bay and the famous Broadchurch beach. Note that West Bay does have an arcade and a herd of fish and chip/ice cream kiosks, but it's not overwhelming. Based on your description of your low tolerance for such things (which I share!) you should avoid the beaches at Weymouth and Swanage. In fact, if you prefer quieter beaches, I'd avoid West Bay and even Hive Beach in favour of Cogden, Eype and Studland.

Enjoy!

Stuck Chrisrchurch is lovely but I may be biased.

If you're interested in museums OP Poole has some good ones behind the quay, Christchurch has The Red House and Wimborne The Priest House, Bournemouth has Russell Cotes. There is Rock Reef on Bournemouth Pier for climping and a zip wire to the beach if you're both brave enough and rich enough Splashdown in Poole is great if weather iffy.

www.pecorama.info (admittedly just over the border into Devon). It used to be DD's favourite place in the whole wide world! A fab day out, even if model trains are not your thing

Also Swanage and Studland Bay. And def Old Harry Rocks.
