Places for weekend visits in the UK?

This year we have decided to explore the UK a bit more with DC (14 & 11) and visit as many places as we can for weekends and over school holidays.

We're in Southampton and have already added Bristol to our list as we've never been. What other places would you add to our list and why?

Thanks.

There is a lot to see in Liverpool yes. The Anglican cathedral is one of my favourite buildings in the UK.

Maybe put off going to Wells until your younger DC is old enough to be shown Hot Fuzz first.

We are trying to do 3 trips a year like this with our teens, usually over bank holidays. Last year we did Colchester (mmmm), Llangollen and Snowdon (very nice) and Edinburgh (which they loved). We usually look for a convenient Hoseasons lodge place in the area, and try to stop somewhere interesting on the journey.
Luckily the DC like an adventure, don't mind an early start and I have a DH who's happy to do most of the driving (well I've done all the research and booking).
Suggestions for this year so far - Whitby, Chester, Grimsby (we've discovered our ancestors were fisherfolk in Grimsby so we feel we should take a look).
We also live very near to a coach holiday company's final pick up point before the Channel so try to go on a few of their 3 night weekend trips to various bits of Europe, I thought the DC would hate this but they rather enjoy it - I must have strange teens...

Another vote for West Wales (though I'm biased since I grew up there), particularly if you're outdoorsy. The North Pembrokeshire coast is beautiful.
Edinburgh- mainly because I loved the ghost walk we did.
How about a sleeper train for the experience itself? We took the Night Riviera from London to Penzance, spent a night in Penzance, then sleeper train back. It was great fun.

Yes to Whitby.

Liverpool is a brilliant city - definitely my favourite in England, except for London.

Edinburgh and Glasgow both great.
