Sca Fell Pike - OK for non sporty family with young teens?

Hi,

Off to the lakes in summer and really want to climb Sca Fell with DC. We are not a very sporty family but managed Snowdon quite easily when they were 10 & 11.

Is Sca Fell much harder? What would be the best route up it? They quite like bouldering but are less confident on slippery scree which I've heard there's a lot of along some ScaFell routes. We all have proper mountain boots.

I'd love tips on which paths to take, and to hear tales of how other families did it. Thanks.

you'll be fine -its not even the toughest climb in that area (both in terms of agility needs and fitness). The easiest way up is often very busy though

We did it from wasdale, was fine, it's constantly steeper than snowdon (llanberis path) if that makes sense? I found snowdon had some hard accents but then levelled off, where as scafell was more relentless. Wasdale quite a pain to get to and not much there for start / finish.

Not much there LB

I knew I should of caviated that- I meant not much there as in facilities, places to eat etc- I think there's an outdoors shop and a tired, overpriced pub.

The scenery is beautiful, I have a massive canvas of the view down from scafell over the lake. Grin

Don't confuse Scafell Pike with Scafell - different mountains close to each other. Non-sporty DS1, when a teenager, went up with DH without problems. Pick a good day. Can also be climbed from Borrowdale - apparently it isn't the most exciting walk.

LOL. Yeah that's rubbish, that is, drwitch. Don't want to waste our time going there. Grin

If it's really steep from Wasdale, would we be better off taking a different route with a gentler but longer ascent?

Oh Lily, thanks. I had no idea they were different mountains. Which one do I mean? (We want to climb the highest mountain in Britain.)

You want the Pike. In terms of route, it's a good idea to check nearer the time as occasionally some paths are closed off/ rendered suitable only for good scramblers etc after heavy rain or land slips.

You won't be alone in the summer, follow the steady stream of people!

You can't go wrong following the advice of Mountain Rescue

Easiest route up Scafell Pike

They are different mountains, but you wouldn't really notice, as they are like conjoined twins. But it is VERY rocky, and Yes, will be very crowded.

Other than it being England's highest, there are plenty of other Fells that are more fun and more attractive to walk.

Where are you staying?

Mosedale horseshow is my favourite around there - lots of boulders for your dcs as well
