London restaurants and activities for kids?

I'm hoping someone can recommend some places to eat in London for me, DM, DD (6) and DAunt and DCousin - DD's first girly theater trip away.

We've booked a 2 night stay in an apartment near Borough Market. We are going to go and see Matilda but haven't decided whether to do matinee or evening performance.

I want to show DD some of the usual sites and probably get to the Natural History and maybe Science Museum too.

We are going for the August Bank Holiday weekend, so I had thought about trying to see some of the Carnival - but is that just a crazy idea?

As we have only 1 child in the party we would still like to eat somewhere nice, but DD can be quite fussy about food (no sauce, curry, etc) so we could really do with there being a kids menu.

Any suggestions please? We can always fall back on a chain, but it would be great to eat somewhere we can't locally.

A must see if you like food!! Plenty of street food to choose from, stalls to buy food or foody gifts for others and a fantastic place to get your hands on the more unusual items you can't get in supermarkets. The best food market I have ever been to!! Plus you can always get a Pimms or a Sangia

Book your matilda tickets early for that weekend!

Tickets are now booked - we got good seats but I agree Heels it wasn't worth waiting and risking it.

We're going on the Friday night and I think we'll go to Hamleys before eating near the theatre.

Any recommendations for food in Covent Garden type area?

Highly recommended The Delauney on the junction of Drury Lane and Aldwych. Classy for the adults, lots of basics on the menu for your daughter to make a meal of without being patronized by a tacky kids menu. Staff are excellent and accommodating. Ten mins walk to the theatre. Even closer to theatre you could try the brasserie at The Covent Garden Hotel , Monmouth Street? Have tons more suggestions if these don't suit....

Thanks selly The Delauney looks promising.

Unfortunately DD would rather have a kids menu than real food, but I'd like to try to expand her horizons slightly!

Please don't go to the Carnival with a small child- I think it's a really unpleasant atmosphere even for the kids parade. I used to live in Notting Hill and most locals vacate for the weekend

I too would avoid carnival - you will spend hours queuing to get in and out of overcrowded tube stations, walk miles in seething crowds, lose each other, not find any toilets, spend hours hoping to see some of the action, but possibly miss most of it, the 6 yo won't be able to see anything....

I disagree that it has an unpleasant atmosphere - it can be fab, but not a good use of your time on a weekend visit.

Boat to Greenwich, walk up the hill to the Astronomy exhibition, look in the Maritime Museum, enjoy views from the top of the park, Greenwich Market.

The South Bank will have great free activities - check online a couple of weeks before you arrive.
