Southwold if the weather is rubbish

We're thinking of going to the Southwold area for a few days. Are there things to do if the weather is rubbish? Although to be honest, I'm not completely clear yet what there is to do if the weather is good, it's just everyone keeps telling me how lovely it is there

I may be going against the grain but I don't think Southwold is lovely.

Walberswick is nice though and you can get a foot ferry there - good for crabbing and has decent pubs.

There is a pier with stuff on, could be OK if the weather's not good.

Southwold used to be lovely. But then all the annoying rich snooty twats started visiting there and getting second homes and now it's full of Joules and Costa and expensive Deli's.

If it's raining - there is a small arcade and some (expensive) cafe's along the pier.

oh and lots of high-income tourists with kids called Hugo and Tilly.

:(

But saying all that - the beach is nice :) There are some nice little local shops still - a few locally run cafe's.

Lots of pubs and places ot eat (have a pint of Adnams!)

OK, might need to think of somewhere else then. Kellingheath is fully booked

Will you be taking DCs? Apart from the beach & pier there is nothing indoors to do/visit and nothing else close by if the weather is bad.

If you like walking then that's fine, it's on the coast path and plenty of pubs to drop into along the way.

Also, regardless of the forecast, its always a fair few degrees cooler and windier than anywhere else!

Yep, me, DH and DD who is 6. I'm beginning to think London/ City break might be a better bet. We could almost get a week at the Savoy for the price of Centre Parcs

I live locally and have 3 DCs, apart from the beach (& its not even the nicest one in the area) it's not ideal for children of any age. Even the vicar referred to it as God's waiting room Grin

If you do go, have fish & chips from Marks at the bottom of the High St by the Adnams shop - they are the best!

Think all my very middle class friends may have misled me :)

Off to Plan B then, time to start googling Tower of London

If you want to come to this part of the country, what about Norwich? Some lovely boutique style hotels, the Castle & Dragon Hall are great for DCs,I think there is a Manet exhibition on at the castle right now. Lots of places to eat and if you want to go to the coast it's still quite close - visit the seals at Horsey, or Bewilderwood is great whatever the weather.

(Just sending off my CV to the tourist board!)

I wasn't overt impressed by Southwold. Had better stays in Dorset.

AnnieMoor · 27/03/2015 20:43

Love the Tower of London, OP. A truly great day out for the whole family.

Southwold v snootybut nealy everywhere else we went in Norfolk and Suffolk was lovely. You can"t write off a whole county for one horrid town!

00100001 · 27/03/2015 20:44

Southwold in itself is a nice little town and used to be quite nice, with local shops and bakeries etc. Unfortunately now though, it s just full of expensive shops that don't really belong there :/

The beach is nice, it is stony near the pier, and the further south you get (towards the harbour) the sandier it gets :)

If you want a seaside town that isn't full of amusements and fair rides, then this is actually a good place to go :) You just have to know that in advance.

Have you looked at renting a private caravan at Kelling Heath.. Look at www.ukcaravan4hire.co.ukSmile. Not enough to do in Southwold in poor weather.Smile

Ruthiebabes · 28/03/2015 07:47

Sorry it's www.ukcaravans4hire.com Smile

TapStepBallChange · 28/03/2015 20:48

Thanks, I'll have a look, the lodges were all sold out

If the weather is rubbish, you may be best looking outside Southwold.

Leiston has an industrial museum, a swimming pool and a cinema.
Framlingham or Orford Castle? Tour of Sizewell B?
