Our in-laws live in Oxford.

My favourite restaurants in Oxford are all a walk away from the centre.

But I will recommend them anyway: The Cherwell Boathouse, Fishers and Moya.

In the centre, Edamame is an excellent, but very very small Japanese restaurant. G&D's serves good homemade ice cream, and bagels.

Pitt Rivers museum is good, but I might choose to look round some colleges instead with DC. Christchurch and Magdalen are popular choices - Christchurch especially good for Harry Potter fans.

You can do a family-friendly walking tour, but I haven't been on it personally.

I would go to Pitt Rivers (lots of dinosaurs), climb Carfax Tower for amazing views of the city, and perhaps go up Castle Hill. Depending on when you go, you could go punting as well. We have done the bus tour before with kids and it was really good, lots of info about Harry Potter locations etc.

There are restaurants in the Castle complex (haven't been there in yonks so can't recommend any in particular), but also the Boathouse as above and the Trout at Wolvercote (short taxi ride) which can be good for lunch before a walk along the river.

Go for a wander down the High, there are several very nice little restaurants and cafe bars down there.

Pitt Rivers.

You might want to try this Story museum.
Mine have enjoyed wandering around, the Natural history Museum (you visit with the Pitt Rivers), the Ashmolean. The Parks or Port Meadow are good if the weather is okay.
George and Davis on little Clarendon Street for Ice Cream?

Thank you will formulate all of these into a plan and will book boathouse. Appreciate your Ewell! There is a lot to do there!

Oh yes, definitely the G&D on Little Clarendon St! It is around the corner from the Eagle and Child if you want to soak up a bit of literary history as well.

Hello just found this thread and wondered if I could revive it with suggestions for 5yr old DD?

Any must-do's for smaller ones? Harry Potter references will go over her head...

Heels99 · 09/03/2015 09:25

Hi, thanks all for your recommendations, from the suggestions above we did Cherwell boathouse, g and ds for ice cream, carfax tower, Pitt rivers, Christ church amongst other things.

Lisba, for a five year old tha natural history museum was good and the g and d ice cream shop mentioned above.

If you want to escape the city, Blenheim palace is great for the kids with the play areas, maze, butterfly house, but a little pricey for over-5s. There's also Millets farm for animals and play area, and Snakes and Ladders in Abingdon for indoor soft play. But our 3-year old loves Natural History museum, and G&Ds is fabulous. Also feeding the ducks in the University Parks.
