Glasgow - advice please!

Thinking of treating DM and D-MIL to a weekend in Glasgow. Been doing some research and would appreciate some advice.

Fancy taking them to a spa but don't seem to be seeing the right thing;

a) looked at the one in Langs Hotel - too young, trendy and scary (they're both spa virgins and I've only ever been to one once!)

b) looked at Revive Spa but looks like it could be a bit impersonal (i.e. full of hen dos!). Doesn't seem that special.

c) looked at Mar Hall but it looks a bit too posh and intimidating.

Want somewhere central (or central-ish), friendly, good service, and not extortionate (but willing to spend a bit). Hotel with spa would be ideal but would be equally happy with staying somewhere separate. (NB checked out the Cathedral House Hotel, which seems nice.)

Are my presumptions above correct, or can anyone recommend anywhere else?

TIA.

Sorry don't know any in the center but thought you could do with a bump

Embarassed to say that I don't know about any spas in Glasgow, but my aunt and uncle were at Mar Hall on Friday and they said it was lovely (and quite pricey)
Ps my mum's house is directly across the water from it

Well, Mar Hall would be lovely from the point of view that my inlaws lived in Bishopton for a while. But it just looks so posh!

MoreTea...do you know any outside Glasgow?

How far out of Glasgow- been to Stobo Castle a few times and it is lovely. Very relaxing, ideal for what you looking for. Takes about an hour and a half from Glasgow to get to. Not the cheapest place but is special.

Let me know if you decide to go and I'll think of 'useful' things to tell you

i've been to langs a few times, it's very welcoming and not too sweesh for a couple of elderly spa virgins. i think they'll like it.

MagicGenie · 05/10/2006 17:58

aitch, tell me more!

Did you have any treatments?

erm, i've been fake tanned, swedish massaged, LaStone therapised and waxed. two were stressful, two were delicious, you can probably guess which.
it's very nice, I know the owners of the hotel a little and the wife was the one behind the spa 'concept'. she wanted it very japanese, as i recall. there's lots of low light, stone and dark wood panels, whether or not it's Japanese i couldn't say but it's peaceful and pleasant. and it's just though and above the main restaurant space so you can get a nice lunch after and get drinks and things sent up during your spa. there are also wet rooms attached to the treatment rooms with lots of fluffy towels and robes etc.
it's very nice, but given that it's bang slap beside buchanan st bus statio (and the shops) and that it's staffed by glaswegian lassies, it's not too posh iyswim.

If you're happy to travel outside Glasgow there's the Seamill Hydro in Seamill Ayrshire which wouldn't be too scary for oldies!! Set on the beach looking out to Arran and it is lovely! Good food and the pool etc is nce. had a couple of pedicures there whic were nice - not trendily scary or anything - mum and her friends go IYSWIM.. you xcan get the train to Glasgow for shopping etc and tehre are ferries to Arran, Cumbrae, Bute etc nearby.
