Going in 2 weeks. Never been to CP so not really sure what to expect other than a break away, chance to cycle and use pool which should be fine for the 3 nights. Am told that activities can be expensive so will probably only book a couple of things ( 2 girls, 11 and 8).
Anyone with children similar age., what did you all enjoy?
Was eating ok? Think we may take breakfast stuff and things like chorizo, cheese for packed lunch and have dinner at restaurant. If breakfast is nice and good value we might ditch taking breakfast stuff.
Any tips on getting good use out of facilities and reducing faffing?

Also considering going down from day before and staying at local hotel - any recommendations for a day out?

Yes to board games, take ingredients for scone making (or similar easy bake).
There is a Sainsbury's in Penrith, we sometimes head there before arriving at CP. The on site shop is ok for food, but as someone already mentioned, wine is expensive for what it is.
Perhaps you could squeeze some pumpkins in your car and carve them as an activity?
There's roller skating which you can do in the evening before eating out. From what I've seen last year they put disco lights on, could be fun! We've booked our eldest daughter for November. She's 4, it could go horribly wrong for usShock

Can't remember how much it cost but our kids enjoyed fencing. The shop is expensive so we always take a pre prepared meal for first night and breakfast and sandwich stuff, drinks, crisps etc. If anybody is visiting at Christmas the father Christmas visit is not particularly cheap but is one of the best I have seen.

Also remember waterproof clothing as it can rain heavily in Cumbria and it can be a long walk to the main buildings.

Also remember that bikes get stolen there too - not the hire-on-site ones so much, but the private ones so keep them locked up securely.

We have been to Longleat one and loved table tennis (£5 half hour) and table football (50p slot) as a couple of short indoor activities.

You should have been sent a price list here is a copy

Great ideas! had not even noticed roller blading and table tennis.

Thanks all!

The table tennis, soft tennis and outdoor bowling are all really good value - especially if you book at an unpopular time - e.g. earlier in the morning or dinner time. We've beento Whinfell about 9 times since boys were babies up to teenagers.

All good tips re the early arrival and swimming etc. I've never really thought the shop was that bad compared to normal - they have a hot counter that does pies and sausage rolls which can be a great after swim lunch treat.

It's also worth seeking out the pond if you have bikes (it's to the South East of the park) not sure what wildlife there will be, but we alwasy took buckets and nets and have got spawn, tadpole, dragon flies etc at various times......and it's free.

I think it definitely worls out cheaper when the kids are youngert and happy enough with the play parks, swimming pool and general cycling about - it gets expensive when you have teens as the eat full adult meals and have done all the cheap activities!

I think hiring a canoe/pedalo is fairly reasonable if the water activities are still open.

We also take meals for some nights. I usually freeze some bolognaise and then take it with us - it's usually just defrosted by the time you get settled in and ready for a meal. Then I would either go out for an ice-cream or pancake or cake from the shop as a holiday treat.

Hope you have a fab time.

Just for those who said it's cheaper to go in the Scottish holidays - it's not cheaper at Whinfell as it's the closest to Scotland and they are usually well aware of when the main holidays are. We have occasionally picked up a bargain when we've had local in service days. Otherwise, if you want a bargain then you need to drive to one of the ones in the South.

Oh, and there is a tiny wee chip shop in a back lane in Penrith that is pretty good and you can sit in. We've either stopped there on the way back or nipped out a couple of times.

We generally stop at the last services before Penrith and have an early (packed) lunch so we aren't looking to eat as soon as we arrive - that way you can get parked up and straight to the pool :)

Oh, and there is now a Booths supermarket in Penrith. Booths are the best Supermarket I have ever been in ....waitrose are you listening?!...(not been in the one in penrith yet though) they are not cheap, but the food is brilliant. Had a sit-in in the one in Keswick and it was really really good.

Back now and had good fun! Thanks for all the great tips esp the day bag - got there at 11.30 and went straight to the pool; had a packed lunch and did not leave until 3pm.
Sharp knife tip was good too. Our logs, bought from Homebase would just not light so marshmallows roasted on hob!

Our cottage was newly done up and very cosy.

Did aerial tree climbing and adventure, table tennis, bowling, pedalo apart from swimming and cycling and I had a 3 hour session at the spa - so did not spend wildly but still managed to do some extra stuff.

Ate only at the pancake house - foolish of me to think blueberries for the pancake would have been fresh but still enjoyed it as dessert after our lunch.

Myother - good tips for next time and will look out for Booths.
