Hi there, please share your tactics for transporting small children by car between London and Cornwall? (A303 likely, but not committed to that route),

Got the in car entertainment sorted, but looking for a good place to stop off and let kids run about / play/ have picnic etc.

What are your tactics?

On our London/Cornwall journey in June. We went to Stourhead. We're NT members though. I don't know what it would cost if you aren't. There was a great walk and NT cafe etc. Wasn't too much of a diversion either

Do it overnight and they'll sleep.
Thats what we did.

Clevedon in somerset. It's a seaside town about 5mins drive from the m5. There's a huge park with a little train, the seafront, cafes etc. Perfect for an hours stop off.

Cheddar Gorge!

Yes, we've got NT membership. I'll take a look. Great other suggestions too - loving the seaside idea!

Is there much to do for the kiddies at Stourhead and Cheddar Gorge?

Mainly running about at Stourhead. It's mainly gardens.

bristol? taunton?

Does anyone have any suggestions that get us a bit further on (ie hopefully two thirds into the journey), perhaps Exeter-ish?

Anyone been to Killerton?

If you are on the M5 come off at J27 (just before Exeter) and visit Kinghtshayes. Is an NT property with beautiful gardens and a nice coffee shop. Look at the walled veg garden if that type of thing interests you.

NumptyNu · 26/08/2014 07:43

Thanks Bohemond, I'll take a look. I've also been recommended Crealey's in Exeter, but could be an expensive stop-off!

Haynes Motor Museum at Lovington of A303 near Yeovil. Recently been refurbished. Went there last week with 5yo ds and 2 yo dd and DH. We all loved it. Good playground too. It was £30 for us all to get it, but well worth it.

Heels99 · 26/08/2014 14:07

If you are NT members, castle drogo in Devon is a place we have stopped before. You don't need to go in the actual castle if you dint want, can just let the kids have a run, have a cuppa etc.

Heels99 · 26/08/2014 14:08

You can use tesco vouchers at crealy op but tbh I would stop somehwre for a break rather than a full day out or it will be a hellish long day

NumptyNu · 26/08/2014 18:46

I hear ya Heels. I'll check out those other suggestions too.

Okehampton just off a30 about 20miles on from Exeter has a lovely park and playground (Simmonds park) and the okey cokey soft play centre if it's really raining isn't too expensive.

WottaMess · 26/08/2014 19:02

Simmons park
okey cokey
