As it suggests, we're looking to spend a day on the beach rock pooling to break up our journey north but I can't think of any. My 4 yr old is desparate to do this, please help.

new brighton beach has a few rockpools according to pil as they took ds during the summer but dont know how easy would be to sidetrack to

We went to Silloth - and Allonby beach this summer and when the tide is out there are loads of rock pools. Then along the front of silloth there is a penny arcade which the kids spent 1 pounds worth of 2 pences and had a great time.

Sorry, just realised, Silloth is in Cumbria so of no help if it was to break a journey to Cumbria! Nice place to visit when you are there though! Where are you going to be staying? I was in the lake district, it's so beautifull - breathtaking views around the hills and lakes!

jenthehen · 30/08/2006 11:43

We're travelling from Derbyshire so I'm guessing if new brighton beach is near brighton it could be quite a detour. Thanks anyway though. I'll certainly check Silloth out but it's actually north of our destination. Anymore suggestions much appreciated.

mmm I can't think of any either - you need a Lancs based mner to point you in the right direction - most are sandy - Southport has more sand than most - you could play spot the sea instead!

UrsulatheSeawitch · 30/08/2006 11:47

Silloth is in Cumbria though, isn't it...I can't think of anything that would break the journey - unless you're coming from the N, jen?

The coast from NE Wales and up past Merseyside through Lancs is just sand, basically

UrsulatheSeawitch · 30/08/2006 11:47

New Brighton is Liverpool

UrsulatheSeawitch · 30/08/2006 11:52

I'm just trying to think of an alternative to rockpooling that a 4-yr-old would be consoled by - there is Gulliver's World at Warrington, a theme park for smaller kids (but there's one in Derbyshire too, isn't there?)

How about Williamson Park in Lancaster? Lovely park, butterfly house, adventure playground etc, not too far off the motorway.

UrsulatheSeawitch · 30/08/2006 11:57

Chorlton Water Park in S Manchester - lovely big nature reserve with pond dipping. (Not the same as rockpooling I know!)

laundrylover · 30/08/2006 13:33

There is somewhere near Morecambe that has rockpools - this would be an ideal stopoff eh? If only I could remember the bloody name!!!!
Someone recommended it when we were up at the caravan but then it rained and we didn't go....will have a think and look at a map...

Thanks all, at the moment New Brighton is the most promising but a little off the route. If anyone knows any in the Lancashire area that would be great. The weather doesn't look good for tomorrow so I don't think we'll be making sandcastles!!

When you get to Cumbria try St Bees beach.. its fantastic..

PretendFriend · 30/08/2006 23:32

Or you could look for red squirrels at Formby.

I have no idea where laundrylover's beach near Morecambe is I'm afraid.

pics from New Brighton .

I don't suppose you've remembered the name of that beach laundrylover?
