Isle of Wight camp sites

I was just googling Isle of Wight and what it is like and came across an old Mumsnet thread called 'Is Isle of Wight chavvy' which has not surprisingly caused a huge argument!

Researching because am thinking of hiring a camper van and staying at a few camping grounds with my children, aged 1 and 5. By myself as hubby will be working.

Anyone done this? I just thought it would be a fun different type of holiday to do with the kids and that they would enjoy it, but haven't really been to camping grounds before apart from one which was rows of tightly packed static caravans, a dinner hall that was a bit like a motorway service station and karaoke every night, which an ex boyfriend took me to. It wasn't really my dream place to be honest!! It was extremely busy and hectic.

So - without tearing into me, can anyone recommend some nice friendly camp sites that accept touring vehicles and are just more generally pretty and quaint, not posh but not motorway service station-esqe either!

Also, what is the Isle of Wight like? I keep hearing its like Britain in the 1950s, which is fine with me! I just am hoping its more like Devon and Cornwall than say some of the UK's faded seaside resorts which are all arcades and shut down shops.

Ooh, the isle of wight is great! Beautiful beaches, parks, attractions...you can just picnic and swim in the sea all day :)
The Orchards at Newbridge is well equipped but not tightly packed. Compton Farm is a farm with camping facilities and that's about it - it's a real get away. Definitely spend a night there exploring the beach and looking at the stars. The Grange at Brighstone has a shop and play area etc but is still unspoilt. There are more mainstream camp sites available too (Haven) but far more unspoilt ones.

We stayed at Whitefield Forest in Ryde, which was really central and we found it a good base for driving around - It's set in the forest (so you will get to see red squirrels!) with an adventure playground, nice clean facilities - although not completely tranquil because of the nearby main road from which there was some noise.

Thank you will look up all of these!
