London hotel for wedding anniversary, ££ no object

DH and I have our 5th wedding anniversary coming up, and we'd like to stay overnight in London luxury. For reasons I won't go into we can pretty much afford a standard room in any hotel you care to name.

So which hotel would you choose and why?

Bit more info to assist: we like good food and wine, art and culture, obscure things few people know about, jazz, classical and world music. And we don't like tasteless bling (the refurbed Savoy is the epitome of what we don't like), and are not interested in "pampering" (spas, etc).

Thoughts?

Oh thanks for the tip cat, sadly am no longer in London and highly impecunious

catwithflowers · 24/03/2014 20:29

rooty, impecunious is such a nice word! Am in the same position Grin

We are in the north East, miles away from London, so such things are lovely treats. I do, however, stalk restaurants and chefs like some stalk celebrities Blush

Would second the St Pancras Grand. DH and I stayed in one of the chambers rooms it was amazing. Huge high ceiling, windows looked out down the platform to the amazing arch and straight through the Olympic Rings (stayed in 2012). We were given complimentary champagne and strawberries because it was our anniversary. Wonderful spa and great food in the Marcus Waring restaurant. But the highlight is definitely the buildings, it's stunning!

StJames Court, Buckingham Gate is lovely.
Beautiful surroundings, fantastic location service is brilliant but not at all pretentious.

The Goring? (disclaimer have never spent a night there but the downstairs is the epitome of discrete luxury)

This thread was perfect timing for me as I was trawling through Tripadvisor looking for a London hotel for our wedding anniversary. Not lucky enough to have a "money no object" budget, but was looking for somewhere nice.

After reading Eurochicks suggestions, I have booked a room at the Corinthia using the lastminute.com Top Secret Hotels offers. Managed to get it at 1/3rd of the price on their website. Just a standard room for us, but if you have an unlimited budget, they have some fantastic looking suites and penthouses. Tripadvisor reviews are great and it won an award this year.

Jennywren, we stayed in the Corinthia in Lisbon and it was absolutely stunning!!

Hope you have a lovely anniversary, and if you are looking for restaurant recs, there are a couple of great threads from recently! The London ladies are super helpful with info if you do a search on London restaurants or start a new thread I'm sure you'd get lots of hints

Second the Langham, love it there!

jennywren123 · 30/03/2014 21:20

Thanks annaban. We did have a lovely time.

Was there on Thursday night. Unfortunately didn't read your post re: restaurants until the journey home, so missed the recommendations. Will have to go again soon to try some out!

Pirate have you booked anywhere yet?

justgirl · 31/03/2014 13:01

Is it just me that wants to know where you're eating pirate? I love the "secret" aspects of london, but as they're secret, I don't really know of any haha

One Aldwych is stunning, great suites, fabulous service, lovely bar.

I've gone off The Haymarket, the service was rubbish last time we went.

I do think you can't beat Claridges.
