Where to be based in Northumberland?

Hello,
We're thinking of going to Northumberland in July & had looked at Keilder Water but there is no availability. Can you suggest somewhere to be based ? We will be self catering.

Children will be nearly 4 & 1, and they'll have already suffered a 14 hour ferry journey & a drive from Aberdeen to get there, so easily accessible from Scotland.

We always prefer to be near the coast- anywhere between Bamburgh and Alnwick is good. Seahouses great for traditional beach/ fish and chip/ bucket and spade type place but not tacky! Also take a boat trip to the Farne islands to see the puffins.

Have a look at Beacon Hill Farm. We've been here four times. Its wonderful for all ages.

The Northumberland coast is very popular, personally I love bamburgh the most. Alnwick is quite good as a central point to explore out from, though.

I live in kielder, and it is fantastic, but worth remembering that the midges are horrendous at that time of year and will stop you from being outside anytime around dusk.

attheendoftheday are the midges horrendous throughout Northumberland or just at Kielder in the summer (we're staying near Alnwick)

OH's family live in Northumberland and we spend a lot of time there. The midges are only a problem in Kielder. I second the idea of staying somewhere more central like Alnwick, Morpeth or Rothbury as it is easier to to get around to different places. There is absolutely loads to see and do in Northumberland.

I have just looked at the Beacon Hill farm website and it looks fabulous. Locationwise it is ideal as well.

Anywhere between the Cheviots and the sea, there will be plenty to do. Was there last Summer, it didn't stop raining! Last summer, how unlucky were we? I doubt you will see a midge.

We're going back to Beacon Hill at the end of March. It's my MIL's 90th birthday, and as all her family live in the area, the owner of the cottages is happy for us to invite them all to the cottage for a party on the Sunday.
I could rave on all day about how much the whole family love it.

Warkworth is beautiful. Check out www.coquetcottages.co.uk - the best self catering cottages we've ever stayed in. Immaculate, superbly equipped, beautifully decorated...can't recommend them highly enough.

I'd go for Beaconhill too, Elm cottage is my favourite.

If you want to be near kielder the coast would be a bit of a trek. How about Bellingham?www.boerigg.co.uk/ is a campsite worth a bunkhouse with fantastic clean accommodation and an amazing cafe. Don't know any other specific places nearby though.

Other places suggested are fab too but not so convenient for kielder. And there wasn't a midge problem when I camped here...
