tell school you are going to a funeral avoid the fine

MaeWestfield · 18/01/2014 16:12

Well, this IS abroad for me, but I loved Fowey, and all those Cornish towns. Monmouth and lynmouth and apologies if they aren't all in Cornwall. Loved the Eden project! love fudge, fish and chips in sit DOWN places, love art galleries, and seaside stuff. oh the golden hynde ship, I went on that too.

self catering cottage
couple of premier inn rooms for city breaks
forest chalet with hot tub
What kind of thing do you like?

plum100 · 18/01/2014 16:14

Thanks for that. Dont think they wpuld believe a funeral would last a week though!!!

Thinking along hotels in the uk - we never stay anyway other than a travel
Lodge. Other than havens - what sort of family uk hols are out there? X

Yes Mae. It's recent, there have been a few threads about it this week, as the first fines are beginning to be imposed.

givemeaclue · 18/01/2014 16:34

A funeral doesn't mean you avoid the fine. Head would still need to authorise as exceptional absence, there is no right to time off school for funerals.

givemeaclue · 18/01/2014 16:35

Op, self catering cottage, caravan, mobile home in whatever part of country you fancy. Personally I would book the canaries option that you already found

ssd · 18/01/2014 16:36

op google ribby hall, near st annes

BrianTheMole · 18/01/2014 16:36

Cottage in weymouth?

lljkk · 18/01/2014 16:41

What do you like to do, OP?
2 weeks by the pool in sun would be my idea of Hell, but I understand it's exactly what some folk love.

plum100 · 18/01/2014 16:41

Thanks guys will have a look - canaries in tempting - will be about 23 in tenerife- when we went away last year in england on the same date we are thinking of it was -1 at night!!! How nice would it be to be somewhere warm - dont think weve had our winter yet have we?

Wow. Shocked about the fine! how much is it?

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2014 17:21

There has been a widely reported case this week mae of the fine for 2 parents taking 3 children out of school for a week being v nearly £1000, but that was with penalties for late payment and court costs. The basic fine is calculated per child, per day and per parent.

MegBusset · 18/01/2014 17:32

I should think you could get a holiday cottage or lodge, depending where you want to go! We're having a week in the New Forest at Easter (caravan, £800) and a week in the Lakes in August (lodge, £650).

lljkk · 18/01/2014 17:40

In the widely reported case the parents were NOT fined per day. Only for the single absence period. This point is really important. They were fined £360 originally, not £3600.

Our LEA policy is even kinder than that. They are obviously trying to minimise paperwork hassle (thank goodness for common sense).

I would love to find people online to chat with about planning our holiday which includes budgeting for the fines for term time, but I know MN is the last place on earth to do it (argh). I have so many hoops to jump thru and things to remember and plan. If anyone knows of a friendly site where no one cares about the holiday-in-term-time controversy or the odd day off school, please let me know where to register? Ta.

mummymeister · 18/01/2014 23:46

lljkk - you can always pm someone like me. if you have read the other threads then you know where I stand on this. and yes, I am taking my kids out for a week in term time as I always have done and will not be paying the fine as I want my day in court on this one.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 19/01/2014 11:38

I've found dinner bed and breakfast packages at hotels are often not more expensive than self catering options in the Uk. We've booked a few with Hilton or Four Pillars and had two interconnecting rooms and they have discounted the childrens room. We then have nice cooked breakfast, day out with a smallish lunch family swim in the pool and three course dinner in the hotel restaurant. It feels like a proper break for everyone and we get to visit a new are. I know it depends on the age of your DC and what you all like doing.

accessorizequeen · 19/01/2014 22:51

We are looking at Bluestone in Wales as the kids love centre parts but its so expensive. Really interested in the Four Pillars/Hilton interconnecting rooms. That sounds fab, what sort of price did you pay per night? We have 4 dc and not sure I really think staying in a cottage with them counts as a holiday for me!

givemeaclue · 20/01/2014 09:20

Bluestone is not anywhere near as good as centre parcs.

stinkingbishop · 20/01/2014 09:22

What about narrowboating? You might be lucky with the weather! We've had some fantastic family hols on the Grand Union and Llangollen canals.

Keeps the DC occupied and involved because they can all have their specific jobs to do, and take turns on steering/locks etc.

annieorangutan · 20/01/2014 09:23

If you have good school attendance then you probably wont get a fine

Creamycoolerwithcream · 20/01/2014 09:41

Accessorizequeen, we normally pay about £180 per night for two interconnecting rooms, breakfast and three course meal for two adults and two teens. We stay between 2 and 4 nights depending how far away it is and what there is to do there.

accessorizequeen · 20/01/2014 22:32

Thanks Creamy, but ouch! That's a lot and we have 4 dc. Or maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, would really love a proper holiday where I can relax too.
I've read some really great things about Bluestone, not sure I thought CP was 'all that' tbh but each to their own!
