Has anyone been to the Isle of Man?

Trying to decide where to go for our summer hols this year and I always like to explore new bits of the UK. I have a friend getting married in the lake district in Aug and thought about staying somewhere up that way before or after the wedding (we are in East Mids). Looks like ferries go from Liverpool and somewhere further up, so it might work. We have two dc by the way, age 6 and 4. And I like to spend time on the beach as much as poss!

Never been, but looking to take DS there this summer for three or maybe four nights. It will be just me and him as DP can't get any time off work Sad so I have been looking at some B&Bs in Douglas.

DS wants to go to the railways and on the horse trams! I will just be glad to get away for a couple of days!

How are your plans coming along?

Yes, we have and stayed in Port Erin (@ "Surfside Cottage"), I can post or pm you details et cetera, within the the next few days)

I love IOM

avoid end of may, beginning of June unless you like bikes - that's TT time Grin.

its lovely but can be bracing and pack for all weather eventualities

It's a lovely place. Douglas (where you arrive) reminds me of scarborough but not so commercialised. The other major town is ramsey. Beware the Mountain for weather. There are actual weather reports at the bottom telling you what it is like at the top, and blimey it can change at the drop of a hat!
Lovely place xx

Might be a bit late now - just seen the date of the OP but in case you are still considering it - I'm from there but no longer live on the island sadly (just got back after a lovely Easter break there, great weather for a change too!)

You can get the SeaCat from Liverpool which takes just under 3 hrs, or the normal ferry from Heysham which takes 4 hrs. The SeaCat won't go in bad weather though, you'd get transferred to the Heysham boat in that case.

Douglas is the main town with most of the accommodation but I prefer the south of the island (Castletown, Port Erin, Port St.Mary). The beach at Port Erin is ideal for children, and is a good base. Your kids would love the Steam Train, also the electric railway which goes from Douglas to the north of the island (Snaefell, Laxey, Ramsey) and the horse trams which go along the length of the prom in Douglas. I second what supa says about the weather on Snaefell though!

Lots of beautiful glens for walks for you all, amazing scenery. Silverdale has a good playground & boating lake, Glen Maye is good for the beach and has a nice waterfall, I also like Glen Helen.

If the weather is bad, there is a good pool in Douglas with slides etc for the kids, a soft play in Castletown, Villa Marina in Douglas also has a soft play place I believe, also check out the wildlife park at Ballaugh and the Manx Cat sanctuary (all favourites of my family!)

And as a poster above said, avoid TT week (2 wks really) in late May/early June, also MGP which is late August.
