Hotel advice for London trip

We want to go to london for around 4 days to show the kids the sights etc. and maybe watch a show one evening. Planning for February half term.
We live in devon so have a couple of choices. We can either stay Central London and get the train there. Or stay on the outskirts (maybe brentcross) and drive down.

We don't want somewhere fancy just a place where we can sleep and have breakfast.

Any suggestions of where hotels we can stay on the outskirts that would have free parking? Would need to be near enough to get the tube in and out without it costing the earth. We have two kids age 9 and 4 so driving and stay outside the centre would be better option.

Not sure if this is useful , but we've just booked with 'housetrip' very reasonably priced/well-located flats/apartments - we've got a gorgeous looking/well-reviewed place in kensington nr all the museums/cafes etc..might give you more space without having to book two hotel rooms or a family room?

There is a holiday inn at Brent cross, but not the easiest tube access.
Whetstone Travelodge is a short walk from totteridge and whetstone tube on the northern line.

We stayed at the Premier Inn at Stratford- right beside Westfield shopping centre, views of the Olympic park and the Javelin train takes six minutes in to St Pancreas from right outside the door. There is also a tube option but it takes a bit longer both to walk to the station and the journey time but it is cheaper. Permier Inn STratford reviews

You could stay in a travel lodge in Ealing. Is west which is better for you and you could get the train too. It is 9 mins to paddington or 25 mins to Oxford street on tube. Travel card is about £7.50 per day per adult. Under 5's free. Nice child friendly restaurants and parks there too.

Have a look at airbnb. Loadsof places. Can park in many suburbs (check with owners).

Second airbnb website. I'm looking for a family of 5 next summer in Pimlico, Kensington, Westminster, Paddington and Baker Street areas; prices are cheaper than hotels too!

We drove up from Cornwall and stayed at the Travelodge at Kew. Left the car there and caught the train into Waterloo each day. Really regular trains and we got a Travel card each which we used to get into London and then get around on the tube.
