Self catering Norfolk area - recommendations?

For DH and I, plus one year old DD. Any recommendations on areas to stay in as well as actual places to rent. Looking to go in July, so not much time!
TIA

Sheringham is lovely - golden sand, steam railway, not too commercialised, and plenty of places to go for the day that aren't too far. I used to live there, and go back regularly, so if you have any questions please ask. Can't help with accomodation though, I stay with my folks. If you find something you like the look of, let me know and I may know a bit about the area.

check out this site for cottages
Wells and Hunstanton are nice places too but I second the Sheringham suggeston

Racers · 21/06/2006 20:04

Thanks guys, I'll have a look online. My brother went to Hunstanton a couple of times, but with an older child, so he thought I should look around a bit, rather than just choose the same place

We're going back to Happisburgh further down on the East coast this year. It's only a small village but last year we did things like:
Sea Palling - great beach & kid's playground
Steam railway - Wroxham? (not sure I've remembered that right)
Gt. Yarmouth (not great town IMO - but the sea life centre was good)
Cromer/Sherringham - both good beaches, friendly, relaxed
River trips

Witchycat · 21/06/2006 20:11

Oh, we booked through Country Cottages - not the cheapest but we've always found them reliable quality.

beckybrastraps · 21/06/2006 20:12

There are lots of lovely places between Wells and Hunstanton. We camp there a lot.

FrayedKnot · 21/06/2006 20:15

The north Norfolk coast between Hunstanton and Wells is good with some great beaches - but you will find it the most sought after & expensive area in Norfolk - Madonna supposedly once stayed at the Victoria Hotel at Holkham and Jamie Oliver at the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market, if you get my drift..!

Cromer and Sheringham are more traditional bucket & spade holiday places, with amusements & candy floss etc etc.

There are some great beaches between Sea Palling & Caister-on-Sea - some with little in the way of facilities but great white sand - e.g. Waxham, Horsey & Winterton. As an ex-local that would be my area of choice. Lots of campsites, caravans & s/c accomm I should think. You might get in on a cancellation.

In July I would avoid the Broads (Wroxham & Potter Heigham esp) as it will get v. crowded.

If you want any more specifics, let me know!

Hi, we're looking at using this small caravan site , which is in Bacton, nr. Mundesley. Anyone been near there? What do you think of the area FN?

Racers, there is a lovely campsite/caravans/lodges park in Overstrand, where I spent a lot of my childhood. It's a lovely little village, right on the coast and the park has a swimming pool, but no clubhouse etc so nice and quiet. ~Would recommend it highly. It's called Ivy farm (I think there's a website)

olivia35 · 28/06/2006 21:59

My mum & dad live in Bacton - nice village but sleepy! Great beach but not many amusements for kids - you'd need to drive to Mundesley or Cromer for that. Sheringham nice - I used to run a pub there! Lots of traditional seaside-y stuff.

Racers · 29/06/2006 11:28

thanks surprise - it looks really nice. No mention of the price on the website, so we'll give them a call. thanks.

olivia, sleepy is fine so long as not comatose! are there a couple of shops and a pub? somewhere nice to have lunch? we'll obviously drive out to other places, but bound to hang around the area for one day (actually only planning on going for 4 nights anyway)

Shops yes (general store, chippy etc). 2 pubs - The Ship is trad local, Duke of Edinburgh more family-orientated. Both OK.

For lunch I'd probably walk a mile along the beach to The Poacher's Pocket @ Walcott (on sea front) or the Lighthouse (half a mile inland from Walcott sea front, landlord Steve often has BBQs or whatever on in summer). Or you could trek to the Hill House in Happisburgh (another mile or so).

Or try Mundesley (about 2 miles along beach in opp direction).

Racers · 29/06/2006 19:35

Thanks Olivia, we have just booked in to Cable Gap (the other, smaller one, was booked up). We're also staying a full week, so those recommendations will come in really handy. I'm quite excited now, as I haven't been on a caravan holiday since I was about 10! (DH never has he hasn't lived!)
