I can never work out where to eat in central London.

I know its a bit bonkers, but we really struggle to find somewhere that is a)yum b)not a chain c)affordable. d)wont give us food poisoning

dd and I are meeting up with dh later this week one evening. We can go anywhere in central London. We pretty much like any food (but prefer not a curry) and as long as it meets the above criteria we would probably be happy!

Any suggestions please?

I second Quodlibet's suggestions of Mildred's and Andrew Edmonds. Both great, tho you'd have to book for Andrew Edmonds. Or there's a great Thai place (chain) on Wardour St and Store St. Always queues. But they move quickly. Will google name for you.

Whenever I have a chance I go to Bar Shu. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water... But only if you like Sichuan food.

If you want cheap and cheerful then Bistro 1, which has one in Soho and one in Covent Garden, is brilliant.

Other than that then I'd suggest having a look on toptable.co.uk - we got a good deal at a hotel on Piccadilly recently that I forget the name of. Good food, easy location and nice and quiet.

Also I'd recommend the Wolseley for a special occasion - not that cheap but lovely food and great setting.

we went to Boca di lupo. Really enjoyed it, though we didn't quite get the hang of ordering little dishes so they came out in a bit of a bizarre order. dd had the pigs blood and chocolate pudding. which rather tasted like chocolate spread. we ordered carefully so it wasnt too expensive. Only criticism is that although the staff were lovely to us they generally seemed quite stressed.

Op glad you enjoyed your meal. To answer your question Polpetta is 'Venetian tapas' so a really unusual, quite rich and interesting set of small dishes. Thinking about it, I am not sure if you can book in advance of the day, but its definitely worth popping in to try to bag a table if you are in Soho early evening.
