Child travel fares in London-aargh!

They don't make it easy to understand do they? Last time I travelled with DS1 he was under 5 so I didn't have all this to worry about. He's over 5 now, so I'm having to figure the system out.

We are staying in zone 6, in north London, by one of the national rail 'red route'. So I understand I would have to pay for him to get to the nearest tube station.

But what are the fares? I cannot find them anywhere at all so it is really bugging me that I can't sort it in advance.

Can anyone shed some light on it please?

Can you get a bus to the nearest tube station? That would be free all the way.
In any case, a ticketing website like The Train Line will give you a price for a child from stationX to station Y.

It might be worth thinking about a friends and family railcard now he's 5 - if you do more than a couple of short journeys a year it usually pays for itself very quickly (the 3 year deal is only 23 quid a year).

Look on National Rail enquiries. You can search your journey and there is no booking fee.

Your bus and tube journeys within London will all be free for your child ( under 11) when accompanied by an adult. But if you travel by rail he will need a child ticket.

Thanks, It seems to work out cheaper buying a travel card for him to do the journey as its zone 3-6 according to national rail. So that will be the best bet. I'm glad I looked now though, to save the stress when we're at the station!

It's changed a lot since I was a child travelling around London on a £2 travel card!
