Do go round the Castle. I was unsure taking DS7 at Easter but he got the kids audio tour and was engrossed....and seemed to have cannon fire on a loop.

.....and make sure you are in princes street for the 1 o'clock gun!

If you only do one thing go to dynamic earth it is great for kids your age. Other than that I spent a sizable portion oft childhood on the swings in princes street gardens and looking at the trains from the bridge. Also seeing the penguins going for a walk at the zoo. Finally having to hold Granny's hand and not touch anything in Jenners if your lucky the Christmas tree maybe up!
I took my DD October half term two years ago and she loved all of these things.

The kids should love the toy museum on the royal mile. There's a bistro type Italian in the grassmarket we love for lunch or an easy meal. It's the one on a corner.

Museum of Childhood on the "Royal Mile" is one of our favourites (and free). Chambers Street (National Museums of Scotland) wonderful, Camera Obscura worth the money - lots to see and do inside. I don't rate Dynamic Earth, but lots of people do. National Storytelling Centre is near the Museum of Childhood, has lots of great events for adults & children (and a fab cafe). Princes Street Gardens great if the weather is good. Dominion Cinema is a great experience if there's a good film on....have fun!
