Has anyone walked sections of the wall with kids, and if so where did you stay (or even if not so, if you can recommend anything Grin )

It is wonderful scenery. We did a lot of it when we had a relative in Newcastle. However I would recommend Hexham or Haydon Bridge.

exoticfruits · 27/08/2012 07:24

I can't recommend anywhere to stay but if you google both places then plenty comes up.

Live near there. It's beautiful but beware on a hot day it's boiling every other day it's cold and always windyGrin

exoticfruits · 27/08/2012 07:30

You think that the Roman soldiers must have been very homesick on a bad day!
(lovely when the sun shines)

saintlyjimjams · 27/08/2012 09:21

We like cold and windy :)

Hmm I might get planning....

Hi, I live in Hexham. Lots of options on where to stay but not many actually on the wall. We walk sections with DS regularly. There is a Youth Hostel at Once Brewed (5 mins on foot from the Wall) and The Twice Brewed pub also does accommodation & fab food.

There is a bus AD122 (I think) which takes you along the Wall & comes back into Hexham.

Check out Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum (independent trust) - brilliant for kids & still live archeological dig at Vindolanda.

Hope this helps

Thank Northumberlandlass. I'm wondering about youth hostels, will check them out.

The walk from the car park at Steel Rigg to Housesteads is fantastic. The last section is actually on top of the wall! If you watched Robin Hood Prince of Thieves you may recognise one of the locations (and quite why they were walking from Calais to Nottingham via Hadrian's Wall is a mystery only understood by the film's producer). Depending on how energetic/fit you are, you can walk back on a footpath to the north of the wall that runs parallel, or you can get the bus from Housteads to the Youth Hostel and walk back up to the car park at Steel Rigg.

Northumberlandlass · 28/08/2012 22:00

Donki is right the most scenic part is over Steel Rigg/Crag Lough & Sycamore Gap (the tree) - its the iconic bit of the Wall in all the photo's. You can walk from Steel Rigg carpark to Housesteads (english heritage site).

If you found a decent base the hadrian wall bus can take you back & forth etc.

Housesteads is an ok site - but urge you to visit Roman Army Museum & Vindolanda! The writing tablets from Vindolanda were voted Britain's Greatest Treasure a few years ago.

I am sure there are some WigWams near Haltwhistle

saintlyjimjams · 28/08/2012 22:27

Yes I saw some wigwams (although not entirely sure where). They would actually suit us quite well if they're in a sensible place as ds1 is severely autistic and we can all fit into one (which is why I am umming about youth hosteling - a family room might work with him, although it might not be private enough).

We're quite energetic - the children get trained on Dartmoor Grin

Saintly, you could walk from Haltwhistle East...you would see some stunning scenery. I haven't stayed at the Once Brewed Youth Hostel so can't help there i'm afraid.
If you need any other info on surrounding towns, places to visit. Just ask.

saintlyjimjams · 28/08/2012 22:35

Thank you! My Hadrian's wall guidebook arrived today so I am going to study it!

Tomorrow and Saturday there is a super light installation along the Wall.
If your children are interested they can log on and participate, send a message, select a colour sequence.

There is a BBC News article with links, or Google it.

Allalonenow · 30/08/2012 11:06

Oh yes! It's called " Connecting Light "
