A day in Durham? What should we do?

We are planning a day in Durham in the autumn, to break the journey home from half term break. I've never been to Durham before so would appreciate any advice on how to see the city. Any tips on where to go and what to do? We have 2 dc aged 5 and 8.

TIA

Oh it's lovely, I've just moved back here and I spent my uni days here too! The cathedral is an obvious must but be warned that the parking is quite difficult in the city centre. Will you have a car or be travelling by train?

Rowing on the river is fun. £5 per person for an hour in the boat. My hubby tells me it's hard work, but I really enjoyed it

We will have car... Is there somewhere we can park it up for the day and a reasonable cost? So, cathedral is a must. rowing aounds nice... Any other 'musts'?

There's a really good playpark for the kids just out of town - think its between Chester-le-St & Durham?? Kept my dc entertained for ages.
In town the cathedral is amazing but my dc were v bored there v quickly. The big highlight was a little toy store in the main high street - a friend said it changes location fairly often but had loads and loads of different toys & joke type of things.

There is a park and ride on the A690, just outside of the Durham. That is probably better than trying to get parked in the centre.

Durham is lovely but I only go for shopping Grin

There used to be a HaagenDaaz cafe too, but I don't. think I have been to Durham since about 2001. Quick whizz up the A1 to see the Angel of the North? It is awesome up close.

Bimbis fish and chips (may have changed names rep) for lunch! Very tasty!

streakybacon · 19/08/2012 08:29

It's Bell's for fish and chips, on the corner of the market place. Delish Grin.

Parking is fairly easy actually if you use the city centre multis at The Gates or Prince Bishops, but the park and rides are good.

Durhan Light Infantry museum is good for younger kids, lots of dressing up and army stuff Smile.

Botanic Gardens are lovely too, especially if the weather is good. Nice cafe there as well.

The park in Chester le street is called the Riverside. It's where the cricket ground is for Durham County Cricket club. Has toilets and a little shop for drinks, ice creams, Chips etc. Its a really good park. We often go for a full day when the weather is nice and take a picnic.

Beamish museum is just up the road.
Beamish Hall (The Stables & Go Wild)
Hall Hill Farm.
Broom House Farm. Have a farm shop and coffee shop with all homemade local food. Thy have a massive field for kids to play in with tons of toys, sand pit etc. Also have a woodland trail which is a few pounds each.
Diggerland (there's some 15% off vouchers at mo).
Adventure valley- a bit overpriced.
Tanfield railway

Train into Newcastle is just over 10 mins from Durham.
