Northumberland: Bamburgh vs Warkworth?

Can anyone advise on which is better for a week's self catering holiday at the beginning of July? Will be me and husband and 7yo and 4yo and dog. We want to be close to a dog-friendly beach for walks, nice cafes and somewhere to buy basic groceries. All opinions gratefully recieved!

Warkworth has the lovely castle and not a proper beach but an inlet type thing, doesn't it? Or am I getting that wrong? Me? I'd go Bamburgh every time. I love the place. We have also stayed at Alnmouth, which was quiet and lovely and had a corking stretch of beach, a lovely little cluster of shops and was about 15-20 minutes away from Alnwick and a big Sainsbury's and Aldi or Lidl...can't remember which now.

We're heading back to a place called Boulmer at beginning of summer hols. We stayed there last year and loved it. Definitely dog friendly and you step outside onto a lawn that leads down to the rocky, pool filled beach. Can't wait. DD, 11, says it's going to be better than our Florida holiday earlier this year. That was worth skinting ourselves out for then! NOT!.

Hope you find the perfect place.

Have a look at coastal retreats. We used them in March and they were fab. We stayed in Craster but Bamburgh is beautiful. Boulmer has a pub called FBI it does the best Sunday roast ever! Roast beef followed by sticky toffee pudding! Yumm!!

Flapperghasted, thank you. As it happens we were in Florida in spring, too! Not sure this will top that, but nice to think it might! Hadn't thought of alnmouth or Boulmer - will investigate. Little miss, thank you for pub ideas- sounds lovely.

The beach at Alnmouth is much better and easier to get to than the one at Bamburgh. Warkworth is a little inland and therefore doesn't have a beach, but is a lovely place to visit. The children will enjoy the castle. It is worth going on a Wednesday as they open more rooms up and the hermitage on Wednesdays.

The coast in that part of the world has some of the best beaches in England IMO. If you get a really nice day it is worth going to Seahouses and getting a boat trip across to the Farne Islands.

Don't know Warkworth but loved Bamburgh. The village has a lovely butcher, a deli and a village shop. Asda will deliver to your cottage. Beach is gorgeous and is backed with massive dunes that the kids will spend hours sliding down Smile Obviously has the castle too.

Seahouses is a five-minute drive for shopping, fish & chips, crazy golf, boat trips etc.

Thank you bunbaker. Unfortunately our dog has had to have an operation on her leg at one day's notice, so holiday plans have changed drastically. I am stuck with that week off, so hubby is staying home to look after pups as she recuperates, while kids and I go away. Decided a hotel wold be a better idea in the circumstances so off to Redworth Hall nr Durham for four nights. I feel another thread coming on...

Sorry to hear about the pup Child Hope you have a fab time at the hotel though. And Northumberland isn't going anywhere next year, as far as I know, so it'll be waiting for when your pup is feeling better :)

This is our first year with the dog and I may well post to say how things go!!!

Warkworth does have a beach but it's a fifteen minute walk from the village. Lovely beach too!
