My dh who is very poorly has a hankering to go to Wales if we can afford it. Ashamed to say we know nothing much about Wales, where to start? Is there much for active teens to do? We all love wildlife, hot tubs and river fishing, please has anyone any ideas? Budget would be max £100 a night. Thank you.

Can't believe that you've never been to Wales as it sounds like the perfect destination for you. Physical activity for the kids, lovely scenery for DH to admire, rivers, wildlife aplenty (don't know about the hot tubs tho'!).

It's also a lot cheaper than posher places like Devon & Cornwall, esp for self catering cottages.

Pembrokeshire in S Wales is lovely - stunning coast and beaches (Tenby is a pretty, buzzy town, lots to see and would make a great base). Mid Wales, around Rhyader and towards the coast has lots of rivers, green hills and amazing red kites (see them being fed at Nant Yr Arian near Aberystwyth - it's astonishing) but it?s quite remote.

Really, I?d be tempted to head North if I were you ? we love Llanberis, a village at the foot of Snowdon and a mecca for walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. There?s all sorts of physical outdoorsy stuff for active teenagers to be getting on with (including climbing the highest mountain in the country), bouldering, scuba-diving in a slate quarry at Padarn Country Park, a huge lake for boating, canoeing & fishing, a hydroelectric power station which offers tours and the Welsh Slate Museum where you could easily fill a wet day ? the place is big enough that you could spend a few days there without having to use the car and yet small enough that you can give older kids the freedom to wander off on their own. A great ice-cream parlour too and a legendary climbers ?caff? called Pete?s Eats. There is plenty to see within half an hour?s drive too ? Anglesey, Portmeirion, beautiful mountain ranges, castles, coast etc. Well connected as far as buses are concerned too.

We love Wales ? what?s not to like?!

Pembrokeshire is beautiful. Lots to see and do.

Around Rhayader and the Elan valley is beautiful, I have friends around there, but much harder to find teen activities. There is mountain biking and pony trekking.

Don't know the North, except I loved the slate quarry when very small.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/06/2012 22:50

How far do you want to travel? Because if you live in, say, Somerset it will take forever to get to Gwynedd or Anglesey, you're better off with Pembrokeshire.

I'd say Pembs is the most touristy bit, though none of it is very commercial. Teens might like Tenby, and there are lots of activity centres around there.

Another vote for Pembrokeshire, im from Cardiff and if I didn't have to work I would move there.

Fantastic surfing along the south west coast. Amazing coastline too.

Snowdonia National Park has a 3 peaks challenge for Walkers, but it can be treacherous too so I wouldn't allow young 'uns to venture alone...

Love Wales. But then I am biased GrinWink

We live nr Dover in Kent, so quite a hike. Must admit the prices are much more affordable than most of the UK. Still haven`t found anything suitable though, if its got everything we want then its booked!

Wye valley, you can hire canoes and lots of activities going on. More Ross-on-wye, Symonds Yat really.

Abergavenny/Crickhowell again lots to do. Great walking, sports, fishing, canals down to Newport.

West Wales is great - plenty of caravan sites. Great cycling track too (google for info). Stunning beaches.

TwllBach · 23/06/2012 16:35

Ooooooh I live in Anglesey and would recommend it to anyone Grin it is quite a hike from Kent though. You should be ok to find somewhere to stay for less than £100 a night - I work in a B and B that is four star and less than that (although not by miles) so you should be fine!

I live in Snowdonia! Llanberis is lovely, so is Betws Y Coed, Beddgelert.......Llandudno up the road, Lleyn Peninsula down the other way.

Come visit!

Gower is fab - we're having a rainy time right now though! Try local accommodation agent Home from Home for some idea on accommodation.

We live in the last village in Pembrokeshire, right on the edge of Ceredigion. Cardigan bay has dolphins and lots of seals etc, so boat trips are fab, and the Teifi river is good for canoeing etc. (and otters) I don't fish, but I think near Cenarth is good for fishing. You can stay in a wooden cabin right by the river in Cenarth through www.underthethatch.co.uk, they have lots of other great properties. I agree the Wye valley is also really beautiful and certainly good for fishing, but here you also have the beaches and dolphins, so it depends what you think you'd like to do. Certainly we are spoiled here for wildlife. pm me if you are coming our way as then I could send you some more ideas.
