Whitby - what to see and do

Ds's (10 and 8) have got 2 inset days together in July and I'm wondering about spending a few days in Whitby - we've not been before but the boys love beaches and we're in the North West so it wouldn't be too tricky to get to.

Any recommendations of places to stay/visit/things to do much appreciated! Smile

Maybe they just didn't like us Grin

Ooooooh - have just booked for a lovely 4 days in July (hopefully)! Thanks all again for great suggestions - am ridiculously excited considering it's only a short break, but going away is definitely one of my favourite things to do Grin

Buy jet and eat fish and chips.

I'm going for a week in August, can't wait!

My DCs are 4 (very nearly) 5 and 6.

Can someone recommend a fossil hunting tour, if they do them there and also a boat ride/fishing trip/whale watching if they know of any?

I would like to go up onto the moors as well, but don't know what I'm supposed to do when when we get there?

Any advice you helpful lot?

We're just back and had a brilliant time - can highly recommend it as a great place for a short break - or longer, because although we were there for 3 days, we didn't leave Whitby itself and still didn't have time to do everything we wanted to.

The Abbey's beautiful and ds2 confirmed that there is indeed 199 steps (he only got 197 on the way up and we were going to have to write to the council and everything, but was more accurate on the way down...).

We did a boat trip on very choppy waters - all the more exciting.

Ds1 and I did the 'Dracula Experience' which was fab and only £2 each.

Plus an open top bus tour, visit to Pannet Park and just generally mooching around all the shops and arcades.

And it didn't rain once Grin

Definitely on all our lists to go back again and I can highly recommend The Nook Cottage in Whitby if anyone's looking for somewhere to stay - little cottage tucked behind Church Street and even has a playstation2 in the children's bedroom Smile
