Dh and I and our 2 boys (age6) coming from Ireland to spend a week in Wales. Accommodation is sorted. Lovely house with pool near Abergavenny. Could anyone recommend some picturesque towns/villlages (within an hours drive or so) to visit? Family friendly pubs to eat in. Nice playgrounds. Anywhere with nice shops and cafes that I could have a bit of me time!!! Any tips greatly appreciated!! Thanks :)

Hi Siobhs
I am not very local (25 miles west of Cardiff) but would say that you have fab places to eat in Abergavenny - the Hardwick is lovely. The Foxhunter too. You could go to the Brecon Beacons or Hereford/Forest of Dean - Puzzlewood is supposed to be lovely for kids. Cardiff is a lovely city and worth a visit - you can do do a trip in a jet boat from Cardiff Bay.

Hay on wye is one of my favourite places and I always inflict it on the children if we're in the vicinity! It has lots of bookshops, a couple of good cafes/ pubs and good riverside walks.
The Bell at Skenfrith was good when we went (right next to the castle, which should appeal to the boys?) Several other castles close by.

I live a few miles away and it's a great place to be! So close to lots of places.

The Big Pit is excellent where you get to go underground and wear the miners hats ect with the original workers will give you a tour so worth checking out.
