Norfolk or Suffolk for coastal cottage holiday?

We want to book a week in a cottage this August and have found some nice places in both Norfolk or Suffolk. Which would you recommend? More to the point, any areas in either that you love/hate?

DH wants a detached or ruralish location so the kids can run around outside without feeling like we are hemmed in by other cottages or the owners. We would like to be within a 15/30 min drive from the coast at the most and have handy village/towns near by for food, drink etc. Ideally we would also like to have places of interest to visit on non-beach days.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Thank you

Norfolk! More sandy beaches than Suffolk and lots to do.

Thanks OO, is there any particular area that you would recommend?

I've stayed near Fakenham (about 30 mins from north Norfolk beaches),, at Sea Palling (one minute from beach!), winterton (two minutes from beach!) and this year will be staying at Brancaster. Our previous holidays have all factored in how close we are to a sandy beach for the dogs. Future holidays will also need to factor in toddler friendly activities!

Great, that gives me something to go on! Thanks so much

North Norfolk is best for beaches and lovely villages. Burnham Market (also known as Chelsea-on-Sea lol), Brancaster, Blakeney, Sheringham, Holkham, Holt... There are loads.

And not a kiss-me-quick hat in sight Grin

I'm about 30 mins away from the north Norfolk coast and I love it.

Thank you! OK, am rapidly narrowing down my search area...

I agree Norfolk,
I tend to book direct with the owner with Pure Holiday Homes PureHolidayHomes-Norfolk
as they seem to have the most interesting homes available at great prices

North Norfolk. Sheringham, Blakeney, Hunstanton. Winterton on sea.
Steer clear of Lowestoft. Great Yarmouth unless you want kiss me quick hats.

Don't discount Great Yarmouth. I love going there, hugh beach all depends on what you and you children like.
Loads of entertainment, amusements, restaurants themem park etc

The areas around the Norfolk Broads can be lovely too, lots to do especially if you're brave enough to hire a boat! Great pubs en route as well, if the weather is nice then the children can play in the beer gardens Grin

Great Yarmouth is great for a typical British beach holiday - I agree the beach is huge and there is lots to do but if you prefer the quieter type of break then North Norfolk is your best bet.

Suffolk.
Suffolk.
Suffolk.

Get it? Grin

Look up Southwold. Quintessential English seaside town. Beautiful. Then down to Walberswick. Down a bit further to Minsmere, outstanding countryside and scenery and bird reserve also. Then on to Dunwich. Lost medieval town, washed away by the sea. Little village left. Then on a bit further to Orford and Thorpeness and Aldeburgh, another posh English seaside town. All absolutely lovely and I absolutely love living here. Look up Suffolk Coast for info.

Inland gorgeous market towns of Woodbridge, Wickham Market, Halesworth and Saxmundham for foodie shops etc.

You can't go wrong! Enjoy your holiday.

Oh we had such a lovely oldfashioned British seaside holiday in southwold :) so my vote is Suffolk (but go to bewilderwood in Norfolk too)

Prolesworth · 18/01/2012 22:29

Southwold has sandy beaches and a brilliant pier.

Or wot MrsJB said. I love Suffolk :)

Ooooh, now I am torn! OK, have found 5 or 6 possible places to stay that are all in or near places mentioned on this thread. Will run them past dh and see what he thinks. I wonder if we could stretch to a week in each...
