But best of all is the salmon leap, although I've no idea when they leap. I'm sure woggawombat will know. That's a great list she's given you - it makes me want to go up for a day or two soon.

Have nothing useful to add but had to post as we used to go camping every year at Blair Castle when I was a child and just seeing your post brought back lots of lovely memories. It is a beautiful part of the country. Loch Tummel is gorgeous. Have a lovely time. I am very Envy.

The salmon leap was a regular visit! We also used to go to a highland wildlife park somewhere in the area, kinross rings a bell. Google itSmile.

Now the salmon leap I could never get too excited about, but my mum loves visiting it when she comes! Its in Pitlochry next to the Festival theatre (loads on there). The wildlife park is possibly this one at Kingussie (about 1 hr north up the A9 close to Aviemore and the Cairngorms
www.highlandwildlifepark.org/
If you are going up to Aviemore there is a bit more of a tourist infrastructure there, another place thats community run, rather good and free is
www.highlandfolk.com/ some great local volunteers dress up in costume and keep in character, the school master is great he kept a load of 14 year olds spellbound and then
writing with a quill and ink on my last visit!

elliepac · 15/01/2012 18:48

Aaah Kingussie, that's it. I was so closeGrin.

Thank you for all this, We like to visit local area's so these are idea. Looks like I best get the travel sickness pills for ds as he's very travel sick on country roads. He didn't take well to the Lake District.

Lots to start investigating. Cheers, We're in Edinburgh so not too far to go to.

We went there last June, it's a lovely caravan park but a bit isolated, to get there it's about 12 miles of winding narrow road so take everything you need for the day out with you as it is a pain in the arse to go back for anything. The swimming pool on site is fine if a bit basic. I would recommend Active Kids park in Stanley and the wildlife park near Crieff, can't actually remember the name of it but there is a tourist information bit in the booking office at the caravan park so they will probably have a leaflet for it. Our caravan was near the duck pond, take some extra bread as we loved throwing bread out the caravan window for them.
