I know there have been threads about norfolk before but i am being lazy and not looking them all up.
I have booked a cottage in cromer for a week in the summer for me and dh and 2 boys. One son has autism so we are limited in what family type things we can do. No national trust for us. Our most successful hols was lots of different beaches in wales, indoor bowling, little fair rides for the kids and lots of quiet evening walks on the beaches. We have never been to norfolk and now i have booked and am worried there wont be enough to do for us. Someone reassure me please?!

sounds perfect for you as long as the weather is ok, great beach, little pier. If you can manage a steam train the Poppy Line is excellent for an all day on and off excursion.
There are plenty of things further afield if you want to get away from the beach and can drive (sealife centre and Hunstanton for example)
Have a top time!

cairnterrier · 29/12/2011 21:01

Sounds as though Cromer and the North Norfolk coast will be great for you. There are a few steam train lines around and at Wells-next-the-Sea (up the coast from Cromer) there's a little train to take you to the beach.

There are some NT properties around but they have big grounds for children to run around in and great places for picnics.

Cromer is a typical seaside resort but smaller and a bit quieter than most others. The beach and pier are really good and lots of places to buy the kit to go crabbing. There's also a little funfair down by the beach.

Hope you have a great time. x

namechangerbat · 29/12/2011 21:03

OOO what have you booked? We looked at Cromer but couldn't decide on a holiday house.

Have stayed local to there, camped in kelling I think it was called. There is a military / tank museum place near and lots of lovely beaches Grin

ProPerformer · 29/12/2011 21:08

Hi

Can't remember exactly what there is in Cromer so can't say too much, but my Nanna (Grandmother) lives in Norwich and when my cousins and I were young we used to have many a trip to Cromer for the day and always had loads to do.
I haven't been there for a few years, but if memory serves me right I can lust a few things that we did...
?Getting a line and going crabbing
?Eating the 'famous' Cromer dressed crabs
?funfair
?penny arcades / amusements
?Playing on the beach
?Fun on the pier
?The pier theatre has some good shows
?Crazy golf
?Good fish and chips
?Sometimes had entertainment on the beach
?seaside walks
.....
Probably more that i don't remember and some may not be suitable or not there now, but hopefully will give you an idea.
If you have a car there are places within an hour /half hour drive that are good too.

Hope it helps.

You could visit Holkham the grounds are brill for kids to run around and they can see the deer wandering about. Also Holkham beach is out of this world its is huge and on a sunny day can look almost tropical, my dd used to love it as it never gets really busy.

Crabbing at Wells is always a favourite to a line and bait is about a fiver although you will need to check for high tide.

hellhasnofury · 29/12/2011 21:16

You won't be far away from Pleasurewood Hills. I might be wrong but I think there's a place called Bewilderwood near Norwich that's worth a visit too.

IndianOcean · 29/12/2011 21:21

Nearby 'attractions':
Amozonia Zoo
The Shire Horse Centre
The Steam Museum at Thursford
Musselburgh Military Museum (or something like that)

or

A ferry trip to see the seals at Blakeney Point (ferries leave from Morston - book in advance over the 'net or phone) if your autistic child would manage an hour's boat trip? The seals are almost within touching distance.
Go to Wells Next The Sea, where there is an indoor soft play place in the town, on the quay, or down by the beach trampolining, a boating lake, pinewoods to explore, and one of the best beaches in the country.

Cromer has a tiny museum, with information about the fossilised Mammoth found at West Runton. W Runton beach is nice, too. Further along the coast Brancaster has a lovely beach. And Holkham. But Wells, whilst being thoroughly wild and unspoilt, has access to ice creams and toilets.

Good cliff top walks from Cromer.

Crabbing from Blakeney Quay.
Rent a canoe on the creek at Blakeney.
Sheringham has a small theatre, and the indoor Splash pool with wave machines etc.
Cromer has a small but good multiplex cinema.

Sheringham Park is a nice NT place - outdoor walks through woods and spectacular rhodedendrons if you are there in June.

An hour and a bit drive to Bewilderwood.

We went to Norfolk last summer and found lots to do, it's quite weather dependent though unless you don't mind getting wet, we had a newborn with us so didn't want to be out in the wet.

We loved looking for crabs on Cromer beach,
The pier
Bewiderwood
Boat trip on the broads
Dinosaur adventure park
Beaches

Fleecy · 29/12/2011 21:32

Bewilderwood and the Dinosaur Park would be good. You say no NT properties but there's a nice park nearby called Sheringham Park with lots of trails to walk and lovely views out across the sea.

Holkham Beach is amazing and Blakeney might also be worth a visit - you can take a trip out to see the seals, if the tide is right you can go crabbing or just have a paddle.

If you're on the train you can visit Norwich for great shopping, the castle and museum etc and you could go to Gt Yarmouth which, although it's much the same sort of seaside stuff as Cromer, is on a larger scale. I wouldn't personally want to spend all my holiday in Gt Yarmouth but it's great for a day out with children.

Cromer itself has a pier, small selection of funfair rides on the front, crazy golf , fish and chips etc. Plus there's a small zoo, Amazona, just outside Cromer itself.

On a rainy day, Splash in Sheringham might be a winner - pool with wave machine and waterslide. I used to love it as a child but that was many years ago.

There's also a tank museum and maize maze in North Norfolk. Wroxham Barns has a nice cafe, crafty type shops for adults plus a junior farm and fairground rides for children.

Loads to do here Smile

Wow thanks that sounds like our sort of thing. We will be driving so can get to local places. I wilk print this thread off and take it with us. The boys are happiest on the beach with fishing nets and buckets seeing what they can find. Fingers crossed for ok weather.

Google the seal trips in advance and check the timings.
They go from Morston, not Blakeney, but you can book on Blakeney quay.

dlady · 31/12/2011 17:32

We love Norfolk, Cromer is a nice smallish seaside town. Dinosaur Adventure was brill, although it must be 5yrs since we went. We always hire a boat for a few hours on the broads, usually go from Potter Heigham, although you can go from Wroxham. Also Wroxham or Horning for a guided tour on a boat. Gt. Yarmouth for a busy, large seaside place. Much further south in Suffolk (but still do-able in a day) there is African Adventure, a zoo or Pettitts, a mini theme park with animals. I have been going (not every year) to Norfolk since I was 11, 35 years :)

cairnterrier · 01/01/2012 13:56

diet before you come, it might be worth checking out this website: www.norfolktouristattractions.co.uk There's a booklet published each year called Great days out in Norfolk (easy to pick up from tourist information, stations, and guest houses/hotels etc), it's a list of most of the big tourist attractions but also has lots of vouchers for money off inside. The booklet from last year has the website above on the front of it, so might be worth checking the website first?

Let me know if you can't get hold of one and will post a 2012 one on for you when they come out.

Xmas Smile
Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/01/2012 14:20

We did Cromer for a week last year.

Seal trip was amazing, absolutely loved it. It ws the one day we had glorious summer sunshine which helped but I'd recommend it.
Bewilderwood was great.
Wells has a fab beach.
If you time it right for RNLI day you get to see the life boat launch at Cromer. That was awesome.

dietstartstmoz · 01/01/2012 14:27

Thanks cairnterrier and everyone for the advice and tips. As it will be our only family hols this yr i hope we can enjoy it as life is stressful anyway due to ds2's autism. Will start researching i really fancy the seal boat trip just not sure about ds2 and others on a confined boat!

OP posts:
ProPerformer · 01/01/2012 14:59

Buy a cheap digital camera on eBay and challenge ds2 to take various pictures of the seals - my mum loves telling the story of when I was about 3 or 4 and she [stupidly] let me borrow her camera while on the seal trip: I used a whole 36 pic film (yes film! Lol) just taking pics of the seals! She won't ever let me live it down! Ds will probably be ok on the trip I reckon. :)

ProPerformer · 01/01/2012 15:00

My cousin has downs syndrome and loves the seals! :) (ok she's 40 but...)

goingtoofast · 01/01/2012 15:04

Crabbing is great, they seem to prefer squid over bacon.
