Thinking of going on holiday to Yorkshire, appletreewick area - is there enough stuff to do?

giving up with beach holidays after two years of monsoon weather. We never get on the beach so what's the point.!

So was thinking of Yorkshire dales and someone I know camped at appletreewick and said the site was nice. So now looking at attractions in the area.

So far am thinking of,

Harewood house
Leeds armories. Shopping in Leeds
Forbidden corner
Ingleton waterfall walk. I know it's a bit of a trek but it's lovely there, went 20 years ago and would like to go back.
Kettle well, walking in the area. Also have distant memories of kettle well and would like to go back
National coal mining museum
Lightwater valley
Yorkshire sculpture park.

Any of these no good or any other suggestions?

Dd will be 11. We went to eureka some years ago and didn't like it too much so don't think we'd go back there.

That's a lot of travelling Viva - you'll be worn out! Its a long way to the Sculpture Park at Bretton from Appletreewick and no direct route. Ditto the Coal Mining Museum. But yes, the camp site is lovely and the river good to play in - my kids have spent hours there but might want to get a wetsuit if the weather not so good.

yes to the Forbidden Corner! Bolton Abbey, Burnsall, Skipton Castle, Haworth - lots of Abbey's round there actually Fountains, Jervaulx and castles Middleham, Bolton. Malham is good for walking - dont think you need to leave the Dales really there is lots to do!

Thanks. I guess we could always stop at the sculpture park on the way home down the m1. Abbeys and castles sound good as well, think it will be fun.

Castle Bolton is great for a day out. Appletreewick is lovely and there is a great pub for food. We passed a trout fishing place on the way back from there in the summer which looked like an interesting day out. Aren't there caves at Ingleton as well?

Sounds like a great idea Xmas Grin

Yes agree - Castle Bolton is one of my favourites - my 10 year old DD loved it and spent ages doing the craft activities and pretending to be a medieval lady - there was a re-enactment company there though doing all sorts of stuff so might be worth checking which days they are on site.

I think you'd love it, I camped there too - especially if you enjoy walking as a family.

I'm excited now. Is there stuff to do if its really chucking it down? Do some of the castles have inside bits or are they total ruins?

Bolton Castle is almost complete I think so yes plenty to do inside. Ditto Skipton. Middleham is ruined though. Forbidden Corner also has lots of inside stuff now to hide from the showers - and still fun to explore in the rain -adds a bit more gothic atmosphere! Both have lovely cafe's also. You could go to Ilkley for the day if its raining and while away a few hours at the museum and Bettys tearoom (usually not as busy as the ones in Harrogate and York).

Harrogate has an indoor climbing centre, lovely warm, modern leisure pool, and an award-winning Turkish Baths where you could warm up but you have to 16 to go to the Turkish baths so no good for you. Sad

There is a steam railway to ride on at Embsay. I forgot to mention the Falconry Centre at Settle - my little ones always liked that. Harewood worth a visit if you have never been and sometimes has events in the grounds. Knaresborough very pretty, rowing boats on the river, another castle, Mother Shipton's caves.

I think you just have to come prepared with good waterproofs and be thankful for the sunny days.... Grin

Fab, sounds brilliant. Thanks a lot.

Definitely go to Forbidden Corner - it's fab!

Yorkshire Sculpture Park - lovely for a walk round and if you like photography you can get some fab sculpture shots. The cafe is very good. Good stop over on your way to/from maybe.

I live near there and would add Hesketh Farm park near Bolton abbey - a petting farm. Before DS we would borrow children so we could go there as the animals are so cute! If you visit Skipton there's a lovely walk round the back of the castle that starts across the road from the legendary Stanforth's pork pie shop. It takes you up into Skipton woods past waterfalls and you get a view of the back of the castle that hardly anyone seems to know about.
