Hi as title says, planning on moving to chesterfield early next year, anyone from the area can advise on area's to avoid, what area is best for a secondary school etc etc. We are planning on going up in the next month or so to have a reccy but need a good place to start.

Any advise would be fantastic.

Thanks in Advance :)

Brookfield is by far the best secondary school in Chesterfield. 'Flagship' school for the area. It is on the south side (Holymoor side) of town.

thanks :)

are you actually moving to chesterfield itself, or one of the outer bits or nearby villages?

april74 · 07/11/2011 08:17

that is open at the moment, we are looking for the best place in the area we have a 4.5 yr old and a 12 year old. Both dh and I have cars so short travelling will not be a problem. Are they any areas best to avoid?

If you are going to outlying villages, Lady Manners in Bakewell and Hope Valley College in Hope are both good (both secondary). Very different though. This is based on experience of working with work experience teenagers from both these schools. rather than me/DCs having been there. It's a lovely area.

Lady manners is living on past glories. hvc is far better.

When we were choosing a secondary for our eldest, we had the senco from lady manners meet us and it was awful. This is how we do things very much a We Are Lady Manners Don't You Know, Bow Down Before Us attitude. HVC, otoh - flexible, accomodating, wanted to know about my son and his needs rather than telling me how my son, regardless his needs, would fit into their perfect world.

I really wouldn't recommend lady manners Grin

Areas to avoid - bolsover. Bolsover is a pus filled boil on a haemerrhoid sticking out of the arse of england!

Clowne is barely better.

Parts of newbold are liveable.

Walton used to be quite nice.

Old brampton is ok.

shuttlewood is probably still toxic from the old coalite plant!

erm, grassmoor is a bit rough, hasland's a bit better.

to be frank - I'd give the lot a miss. Go rural and drive in.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 07/11/2011 08:41

oh, and bakewell - really pretty, but if you're not 200th generation, you're not local Grin

I was talking to a woman in the drs when we lived around bakewell. She was telling me she'd lived there for some 50 or 60 odd years (can't remember now) and she was talking to this woman, chatting, it came up that she'd moved there at some point and the woman said "Of course, I'm Bakewell"

This woman told me she replied "Oh yes? Tart or Pudding"

I am not worthy, I am not worthy Grin

Have to agree about LM. DDs daughter very badly bullied there for two years- mentally and physically. Her face did not fit.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 07/11/2011 09:24

Sorry, dd's friend, not daughter!
Hecate's outlying horrors description spot on except she has missed out Clay Cross which is slightly worse than Bolsover.

Thanks for all your input. :)

Seen houses for sale in Dronfield, north wingfield & glapwell any thoughts of these places.

no, maybe and hell no Grin

barbarianoftheuniverse · 07/11/2011 12:07

Suggest you look West-ish rather than East-ish.

Although I believe Glapwell once had a rather notable tip.
