Scafell Pike and 14 year old

Having walked Snowdon several times, I would like to visit the lake district and climb Scafell Pike.

I have a 14 year old son who I would like to take with me who is reasonably fit (probably more so than me!).

How much more different / difficult is Scafell Pike compared to Snowdon? Any tips or recommendations?

Thanks.

Which Snowdon routes have you taken? If youve done the tougher ones, you should be fine with Scafell.

Scafell Pike is fantastic but is VERY different to Snowdon.
Fitness-wise you should be fine. Scafell Pike from Wasdale (shortest but steepest of the popular routes) is fairly straight forward. Is this the route you were considering?

Good mountain awareness (such as assessing the weather, taking the right kit and ability to navigate with a map and compass) is however essential. Scafell Pike can be very disorientating in clag. Unlike the popular Snowdon paths it can be difficult to pick up the correct route down as the summit is very...erm...bouldery and there are several routes off that are marked with cairns.

Go April/May onwards when the days are longer.

It's a great mountain and I'm sure you and your son will love it, especially if you get clear views unlike every time I've been up

I would definitley recommend the climb having done it, though at some point you may wish to turn back, don't! It is well worth the view. Smile
