Hi looks as though we will stay in UK, just cannot afford to go to Florida which is what my dh and kids want to do. Need to come up with something to entice them here, any ideas for something abit different?

Featherdown farm/ countryhouse hideout for something very chilled? Hire a canalboat/campervan and make the most of our beautiful countryside? If theme parks are your thing what about basing your hol around a uk theme park? You could do 2 days at theme park and 5 days exploring surrounding area? For a traditional seaside holiday I can highly recommend the sands apartments in Scarborough. Scarborough has lots to keep children entertained.

Are YHA or PGL family holidays an option, or somewhere like Bluestone ? The kids would have a choice of activities and to socialise while you and dh could opt in/out as you choose.

Whats countryhouse hideout? Sat here trawling and trawling, don1t think Featherdown would be an option as my dh gets very cold since he has been on chemo.

We're going to London. Hoping to do a few 'treaty' things that we wouldn't normally do as too expensive:

  • a proper afternoon tea
  • a boat trip
  • ice cream parlour etc.

Edinburgh? Heaps going on in the festival and fringe in august. Accomm might be a problem though.

minxthemanx · 23/07/2011 19:47

Cornwall, surfing etc? Juliots Well is nice holiday park, bit more up market. Wooden lodges etc. Bar/restaurant, outdoor pool. Cycling on Camel Trail. Theme parks around in Cornwall. Juliots Well is near Camelford and you can cycle the Camel Trail. Nice pubs too.

orienteerer · 23/07/2011 19:51

I hesitate to say this as have never tried it myself - canal boat? Thinking more along the lines of a different pub each day/night, physical activity at locks, can get off and walk/cycle along tow path etc.

Conflugenglugen · 23/07/2011 20:07

I third the canal boat idea. Work during the day, a great community feel, pubs at night.

orienteerer · 23/07/2011 20:41

......or CenterParcs?

orienteerer · 23/07/2011 20:45

...or Bluestone, Pembrokeshire

triplets · 23/07/2011 22:21

Gosh you are all being good. Will look at Bluestone, CP way too expensive, canal boat ...............my dh has actually just spent 8 nights on one three weeks ago, he went for his first ever break with a mate, came back with very sore feet and I think though he won`t admit it it took it out of him after his chemo etc.

OK, appreciate that Canal Boat is out of equation, will re-think and report bak with ideasGrin.

orienteerer · 23/07/2011 22:34

triplets - not being nosey but whereabouts in UK are you, vaguely, T'would just help in terms of ideasGrin.

frazzled74 · 23/07/2011 23:48

i would get a self catering apartment in edinburgh, loads to do for teenagers.and still nice scenery, historic places and sea nearby.

Goodmorning! We are in Deal nr Dover in Kent. Could go over to France but tbh the kids find it boring, most gites are rural and the euro is the pits just about 1 to the £. I guess Its looking for a complex with a pool etc for them, perhaps a lake for fishing and a lovely log cabin with a hot tub for me, just dont want to cook every night as I always do! Dh likes a drink so wont go ut to a pub etc if he has to drive, I dont drive so its a problem! Then the weather forecast for our summer is dire, cant believe in 6 weeks we will be in Sept!

With 3 teenagers to do any locks and share steering a canal boat or perhaps a motor cruiser holiday might be more manageable that for just 2 men alone. Could always moor up in the same place for a couple of nights before moving on (ie.Stratford, Bath/Bristol on Kennet & Avon, Norfolk Broads, Thames). Pierre et Vacances have some sites not far from Calais - Belle Dune has activities for all age groups and a indoor/outdoor pool complex and within easy reach of sandy beaches by bike, car or foot.

Bluestone could well fit your log cabin description btw

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2011 13:52

Edinburgh is lovely. Tbh a city break could work well, as you can give the teens some freedom. Our plan in London is to do some things as a family and somewhere the girls go off alone for a bit then meet up with dp and I later: eg we will do The Wallace Collection whilst they 'do' Topshop on Oxford Street! :)

orienteerer · 24/07/2011 18:02

Have no knowledge of it, looks a bit holiday campish(?) and a home for failed XFactor performers Grin but very good reviews on trip advisor Potters Holidays, Norfolk.

emmanumber3 · 24/07/2011 18:11

There's a holiday park called Warmwell in Dorset - has the log cabins for you (at different levels of luxury Smile) and plenty of sporty type activities for the kids. I think it might be run by Park Holidays or Park Resorts nowadays - used to be a Haven years ago.

Dorset is also a very pretty county - but not quite so far to travel as Devon or Cornwall. Not sure on prices though.

orienteerer · 24/07/2011 18:34

Got it, just remembered reading several MN threads on Sandy Balls in the New Forest. Perhaps no availability for nice lodges in August?

triplets · 25/07/2011 01:10

Hi ............can`t sleep! Sandy Balls (lurve that name) is fully booked, its always booked. Am looking at offers for CP in Europe. Many moons ago we had a 4 night break at Port Zelande in Holland which was good.
